What are your options?
- Use lotions such as the Skin Beautifying Milk Maxi-Tone; it can relieve dryness and flaking. Alternatively, add Clear Essence Skin Beautifying Body Oil to bath water to help seal in moisture. We also have our Specialist Skin Care Body Oil and both can be applied directly to the skin. Look for products in our Anti-Aging Line with alpha hydroxy acids, which gently exfoliate to remove dead skin cells which will allow more water and moisture into healthy skin.
- Avoid antibacterial and deodorant soaps, which can be harsh and drying. Instead, use a gentle cleanser, such as Clear Essence Olive Oil soap or Carrot Oil soap.
- Don’t take extremely hot baths or showers. Do not soak in the tub for more than 10 minutes. Doing so breaks down your skin’s natural protective oils, which keep it soft and smooth.
- Use a humidifier during the winter. Central heating and space heaters can dry out the air in your home.
- Choose natural, breathable fabrics, such as cotton and silk, for your bedding and innermost layer of clothing.
- Drink plenty of water and other liquids to keep skin hydrated from the inside out. Omega-3s (essential fatty acids found in foods such as salmon, walnuts, flaxseed, soybeans and broccoli) can also help keep skin supple.
When should you worry?
See a dermatologist if dryness and itching keep you awake at night, if Clear Essence Skincare lotions aren’t working, if you have open sores or large areas of scaling or peeling skin, or if you develop an infection from scratching. You could have a more serious condition such as eczema, psoriasis or another skin disorder.
Did you know?
- Although everyone’s skin changes with age, a man’s skin tends to stay moist longer. That’s because a woman’s skin becomes much drier after menopause.
- The best time to apply Clear Essence Skin Beautifying Milk is immediately after a shower or bath, when skin is still damp.
- Since dry skin is extra-sensitive, it is important protect it from the sun, especially if it is snowing (snow can reflect as much as 80 percent of the sun’s rays). Apply Skin Beautifying Milk with SPF 15 or My Natural Beauty Skin Tone Moisturizing Body Lotion with SPF 15 every day to your face, neck and ears.
Chances are you spent some time enjoying the sun this summer. Hopefully, you remembered to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen, such as Clear Essence My Natural Beauty Moisturizing Lotion with SPF 15, to shield your skin from the sun’s harmful rays, but if you missed a few applications and are now experiencing dryness, irritation, brown spots, sun burn, or wrinkles, there are Clear Essence Skincare products to repair and heal sun damaged skin.
Exfoliate damaged skin cells
In order for your skin to appear clear, even, and smooth, you must slough off the dead, dull skin. Alpha Hydroxy Acids loosen the bonds between the dead cells and exfoliate them away. Clear Essence Anti-Aging Line products contain AHA to reveal a new beautiful skin complexion.
Even out tan lines
Hydroquinone lightens melasma, sun spots, and freckles. This ingredient is found within Clear Essence Platinum Line, specifically our Medicated Fade Cream, Skin Lightening Serum and Skin Beautifying Milk.
Repair and regrow new skin cells
Dry, dehydrated skin appears old, tired, and wrinkled. Moisture-binding ingredients like carrot oil plump and firm the skin from within, instantly reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Try Clear Essence Carrot Oil Skin Care Products! These natural hydrators soothe the skin without leaving a greasy residue by repairing skin after a sunburn.
Remember that the best way to keep skin looking healthy and even toned is to prevent sun damaged skin. Although these treatments will help to repair and renew your skin, it is always important to wear a UVA and UVB shielding sunscreen whenever you are outside. Clear Essence provides its Medicated Fade Cream with SPF 15 along with Clear Essence Skin Beautifying Milk with SPF 15!

They seem to appear overnight and out of the blue. Dark spots are usually caused by some form of trauma to the skin. Sun damage causes overproduction of melanin in the skin, creating areas of darker pigment. Tyrosinase is the skin enzyme responsible for the overproduction of melanin. In addition to sun damage, other causes of dark spots are hormonal changes, acne breakouts, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Many women experience dark skin during pregnancy, known as Melasma, that usually disappears after pregnancy. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is caused by irritation to the skin, which causes the skin to produce excess pigment.
These dark spots can be very frustrating, but luckily there are many effective treatments that can clear and brighten the skin within a matter of weeks. Over the past several years, hydroquinone has become a controversial skin-care ingredient for topical use. What is known for certain is that hydroquinone is a strong inhibitor of melanin production and for over 50 years has been established as the most effective ingredient for reducing and potentially eliminating brown skin discolorations on skin. Concentration Counts! Over-the-counter hydroquinone products can contain 0.5% to 2% concentrations, with 2% being the most effective OTC amount. At the pharmacy, 4% concentrations of hydroquinone (and sometimes even higher) are available by prescription only.
Clear Essence Platinum Line uses 2% hydroquinone in its products: Clear Essence Medicated Fade Creme, Clear Essence Skin Beautifying Milk, Clear Essence Advanced Complex Fade Gel and Clear Essence Skin Lightening Serum. These products effectively work to lighten discolorations and fade dark spots on darker complexion skin types. Hydroquinone works by decreasing the production of melanin pigments in the skin. Because the chemical lightens skin by reducing melanin, it simultaneously increases exposure to UVA and UVB rays deep in the skin which has caused controversy due to users not coupling skin care products with hydroquinone with sunscreen. For this reason sunscreen must be applied daily and in conjunction with hydroquinone products. Clear Essence Cosmetics has made this a 2-in-1 step by introducing its new formulas; Clear Essence Medicated Fade Creme with SPF 15 and Clear Essence Skin Beautifying Milk with SPF 15. Clear Essence also produces the My Natural Beauty Moisturizing Lotion with SPF 15 for use once results are achieved using Clear Essence Skincare Products in order to maintain your new even complexion and keep skin protected in sunlight.
Alpha Hydroxy Acids are also very effective at lightening and clearing the skin through exfoliation. Clear Essence Anti-Aging Line with Alpha Hydroxy Acid reduces hyperpigmentation caused by the sun, pregnancy, inflammation, and acne blemishes. These products contain two powerful ingredients able to rid the skin of dark spots.
Vitamin C is a great option to lighten discoloration for those wishing to only natural ingredients on the skin. This natural ingredient clears the skin and adds a glow, while also boosting collagen production. Unlike some other treatments for discoloration, Vitamin C is safe for use while pregnant and nursing. Clear Essence Lemon Plus Vitamin C line has been proven to lighten discoloration while improving overall skin complexion and appearance. This great smelling formula is recommended to be used for 6-8 weeks in order to let the natural ingredients soak into the sink and remove dark spots and hyperpigmentation.
Age spots, acne marks, melasma, and other forms of hyperpigmentation affect most people at some point in their life. Fortunately, there are many options to even your skin tone, creating a luminous complexion.

Dead skin cells often need a little help to slough off. A skin exfoliant with ingredients like an alpha hydroxy acid or a beta hydroxy acid can leave you looking fresh and feeling smooth again.
Our skin is constantly renewing itself, growing new skin cells to replace the surface skin cells that grow old, die, and fall, or slough, off. Every minute of every day, between 30,000 and 40,000 dead skin cells flake away.
Factors like age and dry skin can mean that dead skin cells don’t fall away as easily as they should. When these cells build up, they can make the complexion look rough and pasty and can also contribute to the clogged pores that lead to adult acne. The regular yet careful use of a skin exfoliant can help slough off dead skin cells and uncover fresh, more youthful skin.
There are two main types of skin exfoliants: mechanical exfoliants and chemical exfoliants. Both are commonly available, and both have pros and cons regarding their use and the types of skin conditions for which they are most appropriate.
Mechanical Skin Exfoliants
Mechanical exfoliants work by sanding off dead skin cells using mildly abrasive substances. These skin exfoliants typically are facial scrubs, creamy cleansers with tiny, rough particles. As you gently massage the exfoliant over the surface of your face and skin, the friction works to loosen the old skin cells.
An example of a mechanical skin exfoliants is Clear Essence Medicated Cleansing Bar containing small exfoliating beads. This bar soap is particularly good for people with oily skin or acne, as it remove skin cells and debris that clog pores. But only if you don’t scrub too hard as this can cause further irritation. Dermatologists recommend using a gentle motion when using a skin exfoliant, and skipping them altogether if you have sensitive skin.
Chemical Skin Exfoliants
A chemical skin exfoliant uses gentle acids to dissolve whatever bonds are preventing the outer layer of dead skin cells from falling off your face and body. There are two main types of chemical skin exfoliants, those that include an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) and those that include a beta hydroxy acid (BHA):
Alpha hydroxy acids are derived from different foods, from fruits, such as apples and grapes, to milk. Clear Essence’s Anti-Aging Line with AHA is one of the best anti-aging products for people of color and takes full advantage of this powerful ingredient to promote elasticity and remove dead skin cells. An alpha hydroxy acid is best for people with dry or thickened skin.
Beta hydroxy acids are the chemical cousins of alpha hydroxy acids, but are more oil-soluble and therefore better at exfoliating oily skin or acne-prone skin. The best known beta hydroxy acid is salicylic acid. Clear Essence Blemish Control Wash Formula is the perfect non-foaming salicylic acid fash wash to remove excess dirt and oil and leave skin feeling fresh and radiant.
Alpha hydroxy acid and beta hydroxy acid skin care products tend to be less harsh on the skin than mechanical exfoliants. They also help refresh the skin in ways a facial scrub can’t: They lower the skin’s pH level and help smooth small, shallow wrinkles, improving the look of skin that is dry or sun damaged.
Another caveat: These types of exfoliants increase your skin’s sensitivity to the sun for as long as a week after each use. Before going out, always apply sunscreen — a skin-saving recommendation for everyone. Try Clear Essence Skin Beautifying Milk with SPF 15 or Clear Essence My Natural Beauty Moisturizing Lotion with SPF 15!
How and When to Use Exfoliants
You should not use an exfoliant every day. Your skin needs time to regenerate its topmost layer, which exfoliation strips away. People with dry skin should only exfoliate once or twice a week, while those with oily skin can exfoliate two to four times a week. Stop using an exfoliant if you find your skin becoming irritated or developing a rash. Remember to moisturize your skin after exfoliating, to soothe it and keep it from drying out.
Do you have oily skin, dry skin… a combo? Understanding the difference will help you know how to improve your skincare maintenance routine.
Skin is generally classified into one of four categories: normal, oily, dry, and combination, says Susan Van Dyke, MD, a dermatologist with Van Dyke Laser and Skin Care in Paradise Valley, Arizona. However, your skin type can change as you age, and other factors like genetics and even illness can play a part. “It’s multi-factorial,” Dr. Van Dyke says.
Normal skin, which has a good balance of moisture, small pores and an even tone, is the goal of most skin care regimens. Most people have normal skin, Van Dyke says, but to maintain its good condition, it’s important to minimize its exposure to the sun. A facial sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 is ideal for preventing wrinkles and other sun damage. Clear Essence Skin Beautifying Milk with SPF 15 and My Natural Beauty Moisturizing Lotion with SPF 15 are perfect sun protectants to keep your skin’s natural color. “Put it by your toothpaste and use it,” Van Dyke says. “It doesn’t matter if it is snowing or raining — get in that habit so you always have it on. Incidental sun exposure is what gets you.” We all age over time as well. Even normal skin types can’t beat the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles once entering mature age. Luckily Clear Essence Cosmetics specializes in the Best Anti Aging Skin Care products for African American skin types and people of color. Try our Alpha Hydroxy Line to rebuild collagen and keep skin appearing soft and youthful.
Skin Care: Quieting Oily Skin
Oily skin is identified by an excess of oil (the technical term is sebum) on the face. Some people with oily skin begin to feel greasy only a few hours after washing. “A very oily person would feel the need to wash their face between noon and 5 p.m., because oil has built up during the day,” Van Dyke says. Oily skin can be an inherited trait, but it can also be caused by puberty, which causes oil glands to go into overdrive. You may also notice more oil on your “T-zone” because of all the oil glands in the forehead, nose, and chin.
To dry up sebum try Clear Essence Blemish Control Wash Formula which keeps pores tight and removes dirt, bacteria and oil. People with oily skin generally don’t need a regular moisturizer, but sunscreen is still necessary to reduce exposure to UV rays. Clear Essence My Natural Beauty Moisturizing Lotion with SPF 15 should be applied daily to keep skin protected from the sun.
Skin Care: Soothing Dry Skin
Dry skin, on the other hand, suffers from a lack of natural moisture — there’s little oil to act as a surface barrier and lock in moisture. People with dry skin feel a tightness about their face, and their skin is often irritated. Flaking is another symptom, but it’s not always a sure sign of dry skin. “You can have flaky skin and not be dry,” Van Dyke says. Sometimes, severely dry skin can become itchy and painful, leading to a condition called eczema.
To care for dry skin, use a gentle, soap-free cleanser, such as Clear Essence Blemish Control Wash Formula and moisturize adequately. Clear Essence Skin Beautifying Milk is the perfect smoothing cream to achieve a fresh, even and hydrated skin tone. A second application of moisturizer may be needed during the day, Van Dyke adds.
Skin Care: Balancing Combination Skin
Combination skin is a blend of both oily and dry skin. People with combination skin usually find that their oily skin is concentrated in the T-zone, while their cheeks remain dry. Combination skin can be influenced by genetics and, again, by puberty, when oil glands increase their production of sebum. Sometimes a variety of products are needed to treat combination skin. “You may have to treat different parts of the face slightly differently,” Van Dyke says. For example, a mild cleanser, such as Clear Essence Complexion Soap with AHA, and moisturizer, Clear Essence Skin Beautifying Milk, may be needed on the cheeks, while an anti-acne product with salicylic acid, Clear Essence Blemish Control Wash Formula, might be necessary on the T-zone.

It is often said by medical professionals that your skin is the largest organ you have because it not only serves as a protective layer against the elements, but also breathes and perspires to provide overall temperature control for your body. More importantly, however, your skin often reveals a great deal about your general health and diet through simple observation. As such, in order to look your best, men’s skin care involves more than just proper grooming; it requires an investment in your health and longevity. This involves the use of cleansers to wash away dead skin (along with dust and dirt) as well as the appropriate moisturizers to protect against dryness.
Although men traditionally spend less time caring for their skin than women do, they spend more time damaging their skin through outdoor activities and hazardous work conditions. This is why Chimere skin care products for men feature shaving cream to get rid of razor bumps and irritation, after shave to soothe and condition skin and a cleansing bar to refresh and purify skin. Chimere is the complete grooming line designed for the man of the modern era.
The Chimere Bump Control Cleansing Bar for Normal to Oily Skin by Clear Essence, breaks down pore clogging residue and debris leaving skin feeling fresh, clean, comfortable and even-toned. Chimere Bump Control Cleansing Bar is formulated to meet the needs of men with blemish scars, razor bumps and uneven pigmentation. It is used for the treatment of acne; deep cleanses to remove dirt, bacteria and oil; exfoliates dead skin cells for a radiant blemish free clear complexion.
Chimere Bump Control Shave Gel, is a triple action shaving crème formula that diminishes the appearance of razor bumps, softens tough beards for a clean shave, controls mild acne, and evens out blotchiness. Chimere Bump Control Shave Gel moisturizes and softens the hair follicles, which enables a clean straight cut of the hair shaft without leaving sharp edges.
Extra lubrication helps the blade glide along the skin surface smoothly for a perfect shave the first time around. The antiseptic complexes also prevent contamination of shaved areas and control mild bouts of acne outbreaks.
Chimere Bump Control After Shave Intensive Treatment is formulated with a combination of natural ingredients to smooth, calm and condition the skin, even out the skin tone, and improve the appearance of unsightly razor bumps. Natural fruit extracts effectively lighten the darkened skin of the shaved area, while gently stimulating the shedding of dead skin cells to diminish razor bumps.
- Soothe and moisturize the skin with natural humectants and anti-inflammatory actives.
- Fruit acids speed up cell renewal, regenerating a smoother complexion.
- Anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory complexes curb inflammation and reduce irritation, preventing the contamination of newly shaved areas.

It is sophisticated, yet simple to use. Without being too elaborate, Chimere, provides the necessary treatment draped in the luxuries of its natural and rejuvenating skin care formula. ChiMere delivers the luxury and efficacy that has come to define Clear Essence’s men’s skin care products.

Summer is here and the neighborhood pools are open. It’s time to spend a few minutes thinking about how we can enjoy a safe, sun kissed look rather than a lobster red sunburn. Make sure that your SPF routine is ready for the beach, pool, and summer fun!
First, why do we get sunburn? The sun sends ultraviolet (UV) rays to the earth in the form of UVA, UVB, and UVC rays. UVA rays are responsible for premature aging and the damage to the collagen and elastin in our skin- without applying sunscreen protection we will look years older than we actually are. UVB rays lead to sunburn- the body’s immune response to sun exposure. UVC rays rarely make their way into our atmosphere, which is good news since they are the most harmful and likely contribute heavily to skin cancers.
Your skin has a certain amount of melanin- which is your protective pigment or “tan”. Your natural amount of melanin is genetic and varies for each person. Darker complexions contain more amounts of melanin. Over exposure to the sun means that your skin cannot produce enough melanin/tan to protect you – this is when you burn. When you burn, sun exposure to UVB rays leaves you red, hot and sun-bruised — this will be visible in 2-6 hours after overexposure. Normally a burn lasts for 3-5 days and you will notice increased blood flow to the skin making your skin very hot to the touch.
To avoid this uncomfortable (and potentially dangerous) problem, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm, wear an SPF with UVA and UVB protection of at least 30 (and re-apply every 2 hours), wear a hat, find shade when possible, and check for potential complications related to your prescriptions. Remember that you can easily burn on a cloudy day or behind glass. Don’t forget areas like the tips of your ears, lips, and scalp when applying your SPF. Clear Essence carries many products containing SPF due to the important risk of sun damage to the skin and possible development of skin cancer after many years of damage. Sun damage can occur on any skin type or pigmentation level. Try our Medicated Fade Crème with SPF 15 or Skin Beautifying Milk also containing SPF 15. We use Octyl Methoxycinnamate, a UV sunscreen that fights against premature aging and darkening of the skin, as well as Oxybenzoen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. We also carry the My Natural Beauty Skin Tone Moisturizing Body Lotion with SPF 15 to even out skin tone and prevent future skin discolorations. Chemical sunscreens generally take about thirty minutes to start working, so it’s important to remember to apply the sunscreen before you head out into the sun. If you wait till you are already on the beach or in the pool, it could be too late, and burning may have already begun. If you unfortunately get burnt this summer, try our My Natural Beauty Skin Tone Carrot Oil Bar Soap which has a formative effect in stimulating skin cell growth to rejuvenate wrinkled, aged, and dehydrated skin. The Anti-Oxidant features help to improve skin complexion by removing toxic build-up while protecting and repairing sun-damaged skin!
