Acne and Acne Scars

We’ve talked about how to keep makeup brushes and applicators clean. Now, let’s discuss the act of applying makeup in order to prevent breakouts and keep your face looking just as beautiful underneath. There are many habits we have all been guilty of that we do not think could be affecting our skin.

We often apply foundation with our fingers in order to get controlled coverage, but sometimes we forget to wash our hands. You don’t want to miss this step. Along with spreading foundation across your face, you will also be spreading bacteria and oil from your fingertips to your face. Also, when doing your eye makeup, do not rest your hands on your cheeks, or other parts of your face, without washing your hands. You can even put a tissue paper under your fingers, and then rest them on your cheek when applying precise eye makeup.

Don’t apply makeup to dry skin! Always moisturize your face, and even your lips, before applying makeup. Moisturized skin makes it easier to apply makeup evenly, giving you a polished look. Exfoliate your face at least once a week in order to keep your face soft and smooth, for a perfect makeup application.

Also, when choosing foundations, make sure to choose a brand or a formula that works with your skin type. If your skin is on the oily side for example, look for oil free and matte finish foundations. If you have normal to dry skin, look for moisturizing liquid foundations or tinted moisturizers. They are great for giving the coverage you want while keeping your skin hydrated. If you struggle with acne, use water based, non-comedogenic makeup products that won’t clog your pores.

But, the most important makeup tip of all is to keep your skin healthy underneath. Your makeup removal process and skincare between makeup applications is just as important as safe makeup application tips. Make sure to thoroughly cleanse and tone your skin to remove built up dirt and oil from the face, then moisturize your face each night after a day of wearing makeup. Try our Anti-Aging Toner Astringent with AHA to refine pores, exfoliate dead skin cells and gently clarify and tone your skin by removing excess dirt and oil left behind from cleansing. And, for a light-weight moisturizer with SPF 15 protection and a smooth finish, try our My Natural Beauty Moisturizing Lotion.

Healthy makeup application can be tricky sometimes, but with these tips in mind, you’ll be able to put your best face forward and let the real you shine through!

Nowadays almost every skin care brand offers a three step or multiple product system in order to treat various skin needs and problems. We have often believed that in order to see results all our skin care products must fall under one brand name in order to completely treat the skin.

Well what’s really the truth?

Should you use different products that match your skin care needs regardless of brand or is sticking with one skin care line the best way to ensure quality and skin receptiveness? Let’s check out the pros and cons below:

Pros

Reliability

If you already have one skin care product you love, chances are you’ll probably love another product that brand offers. Brands that pride themselves on having sensitive skin care lines and natural-based skin care products can also encourage brand loyalty, as users want to ensure their skin does not have allergic reactions to new ingredients.

Ease

For those new to skin care, it can be easier to follow and adopt a skin care system that is already created by industry dermatologists and chemists. Many skin care lines’ goal is to remove the headache and confusion that comes with choosing products for your skin type.

Cons

Every Brand Can’t Have Every Product

While brands try to create multiple products for every possible skin issue or texture, it is impossible for a brand to have a solution for 100% of the market.

Lack of Individuality

Products that work for one person’s skin logically cannot work for every person on Earth’s skin. It may take mixing and matching skin care brands to find the perfect combination for your individual skin.

So what products do you choose?

Now, we’re not saying you have to run out and try every skin care brand or mix every last tube, jar, or vial in your medicine cabinet. Know what issues you’re wishing to treat along with your skin type to find products that are specifically meeting your skin care goals. Focus on the ingredients and reputation/reviews of the product from other users with similar skin problems.photo (2)

Also, try to add new products into your routine slowly. Some products take a week or two for your skin to start showing results. Packing on tons of different products at once can make skin irritated. And since your assorted branded products don’t give you an order for mixing and matching, always follow the rule of layering products from lighter to thicker, i.e. a serum should go on the skin before a heavy cream. Your skin cannot tell the difference between brands. Until a company is able to make a miracle all-in-one solution for every possible skin type and texture, we may be resorting to mixing and matching for some time to come!

635850197284573487-484381917_Setting-Goals-for-2016January marks the beginning of a brand new year – a fresh start, a new chapter, however you look at it! People start setting goals that they would like to achieve, or continue to improve on goals made in the past. One common resolution is to be healthy. People start working out more, eating better, and taking care of their overall mental and physical health. The main objective of these goals is to look and feel your best. Proper skin care is also a goal for many. Skin care not only helps the look of your skin now, but it sets you up for youthful, radiant skin for years to come.

There are some easy ways to maintain good skin. The key is to be consistent with your skincare routine. Make sure you wash off all makeup and dirt from your face before bed. Also, do not forget to moisturize after washing your face. For people with oily skin, use a toner before you moisturize. For everyone, no matter what skin type, make sure to use SPF lotion or sunscreen before going outside. Constantly reapply sunblock if you know you will be outdoors for an extended period of time. Sun damage comes in all forms, from sunspots, to premature wrinkles, and worse, cancerous moles. So make sure you are constantly protecting your skin!

There are some common skincare mistakes that people make. For people with oily skin, do not wash your face with a cleanser in the morning. Simply wash your face with warm water. Washing your face with a cleanser in the morning throws off the pH balance in your face and strips away natural oils, which causes your face to produce excess oil. So sometimes using less products is better than using more! Also, it is important to read the ingredients of skincare products, especially if you have specific allergies.

Along with mistakes, people have habits they know are wrong, but do them anyways. One common bad habit is not washing off one’s makeup before bed, and even before the gym. Sweating causes pores to open up, so dirt and oil will build up if there is makeup on top of your skin. It is better to work out with a clean face – the makeup will be ruined anyways if you’re working out hard enough! A final common bad habit to rid yourself of this New Year is picking or touching your face. Even resting your hand on your cheek can be transferring bacteria and dirt onto your skin! A lot of us do it out of habit and without even thinking about it, but it is something to be conscious of in order to prevent future breakouts.

A new year brings lots of excitement and the possibility to redefine yourself, however you may see fit. Hydroquinone has received a poor reputation over the years. Most of the misinformation about this ingredient stems from misuse and a lack of education. People have continued to put the ingredient in a bad light by simply basing opinions on the worst cases of misuse of hydroquinone. Others simply don’t understand what this ingredient does. When trying a new product that has active ingredients in it, it is important to understand what those ingredients treat. Clear Essence’s Platinum and Anti-Aging lines contain small and appropriate concentrations of hydroquinone and we want all of our customers to feel safe and to know what this ingredient does for the skin.

Hydroquinone is one of the few FDA approved skin-lightening ingredients. It can be a great treatment to even one’s skin tone by fading discolored skin such as freckles, age spots, sunspots, and other discolorations created by hormone changes, acne, or injury to the skin. Chemically speaking, hydroquinone decreases the formation of melanin. Melanin is the pigment in the skin that gives it its color. Melanin is also a natural UV protectant. Hydroquinone is found in stores in concentrations of 0.5% to 2%. The FDA has regulated that no more than 2% concentration can be purchased over the counter. A doctor must prescribe any product that contains a concentration higher than 2%. A concentration of 12% prevents the production of melanin altogether. When hydroquinone is properly formulated it is not a harmful ingredient and there is no substantial research proving otherwise.

Important to wear Sunscreen

Beware the UV RAYS

Some may say that hydroquinone causes cancer yet, “hydroquinone happens to be a potent antioxidant and there is even research that shows that workers who handle pure hydroquinone actually have lower incidences of cancer than the population as a whole (Paulaschoice.com).” The only cases in which a patient did develop cancer or an issue of darker colored skin are those who did not use sunscreen in conjunction with the ingredient. Since melanin is our natural UV protectant it is important to realize that one’s skin may become sensitive to the sun after displacing the dark spot or discoloration. Although it is always critical to use sunscreen to prevent damage to the skin, it is even more important when using a product to lighten discolorations.

Research has indicated problematic skin reactions are rare and more often than not, minor. The most startling risk is a skin disorder called ochronosis, which is a bluish tint of the skin. This is caused by long time use of a high concentration of hydroquinone. Again, not using sunscreen will cause the area to re-darken and can sometimes make the area even darker due to the inhibition of our natural UV protection, melanin.

The correct way to use hydroquinone is by following the instructions on the drug facts label or package. Also, before using it is recommended to do a “test patch” by applying a small amount to a small area of healthy skin (such as inner wrist) to make sure an allergic reaction does not occur.

Clear Essence skin care products that contain hydroquinone always adhere to the FDA regulation of 2% concentration. Some of Clear Essence’s skin lightening products also contain SPF 15 so that an extra layer of sunscreen does not have to be applied! As you can see it is important to know the ingredients you put on your skin and how to properly use the skin care products in your daily regimen. Although it is trendy to say a product is all natural, science can sometimes give us the most effective results to ensure our skin is always flawless! The key is remembering proper use of these ingredients in healthy concentrations!!

Below The Surface

We thought our teen years were going to be the end of our acne days, and for some of us they were. However, for others it was just the beginning. Acne is a natural process that everyone will have to go through. Granted, some people have it worse than others but that is ok. Before I go on no matter what your age is and how bad your acne is – its ok, keep your head held high and smile. The great side to acne is there are ways to cure it. There are medicines that you can use to help clear up this situation. There are facial cleansers that you can use to remove current blemishes and prevent more acne from appearing.

According to American Academy of Dermatology, women in their 30’s and beyond still have acne. It may not be visible on the face, but it can be found in other places around the body. Some of the most common places are the back, shoulders, butt, and your upper arms. There also is not just one type of acne, there is the common blackheads and whiteheads but, that’s not all. The first type of acne is called Papules which feels hard and makes your skin feel like sandpaper. There are Cysts which is when pores fill up with dead skin cells, oil, and bacteria. This type can hurt a lot if the bacteria travels deeper into the skin. Last, there are Nodules which are large hard bumps that are under the surface of your skin. This type will leave scars.

According to U.S. National Library of Medicine (Medline Plus) no one knows exactly what causes acne. However, there have been studies done showing a link with acne and hormone changes, which can explain why teenagers and women are prone to it. There are other studies that shows that stress does not cause acne but it can make matters worse. Also, there is little evidence that food causes acne. So go ahead and eat that greasy food and sweets, just not a lot of it because it can cause other issues in your health.

Acne can cause more than just physical issues. It can make people have low self-esteem, depression, and anxiety. It can even create social withdrawals. People that have acne may feel like they never look good because of their acne. Losing your self-esteem can cause depression. Depression is actually very common for those who have acne. One might separate themselves from other and feel that they are ugly. Since acne begins at a young age it can become a trait well into adult years. The interesting thing that scientist have found was no matter the severity of acne, depression is still a common thread. Meaning someone with very little acne could still become depressed because of it.

Well stop worrying because your problems have been heard and have been taking into consideration when making Clear Essence’s Blemish Control Wash Formula for Acne and Medicated Cleansing Bar Extra Strength from the Platinum Line.
