We’ve all had those days when our makeup won’t settle right, leaving our face looking dull and tired. This is usually due to a missing link in our skin care routine.

We’ve compiled 5 of our favorite ways to achieve and maintain clear and healthy skin.

#1. Choosing the right cleanser for your skin

We have all suffered through the pain of choosing a new skin cleanser especially while standing in the middle of the skin care aisle surrounded by tons of different types claiming to make your skin look flawless. Unfortunately, not all cleansers are created equal. Sometimes they leave your skin dry and irritated or can even make the problem worse! This is usually due to an imbalance in your skins Ph levels. If the cleanser increases your pH levels, making it alkaline, it can create a optimal living conditions for bacteria, causing major breakouts on your skin. Here is a mini crash course of the effects of unbalanced pH levels provided by Audrey Kunin MD:

According to Audrey Kunin MD via Dr. Oz:

“The epidermis is protected by an external layer of tightly knit cells arranged like shingles on a roof. Any disruption to the acid mantle, elevating overall skin pH, interferes with this protective barrier, wrenching cells away from each other and results in dehydration, roughness, irritation and noticeable flaking. Skin is left defenseless and susceptible to further environmental damage.

As cells pull apart, minute breaks become exposed, leaving skin more vulnerable to bacterial invasion. Under normal circumstances, bacteria not only have a difficult time penetrating through the shield-like structure of the skin and the acid mantle also creates a hostile environment for bacteria which prefer an alkaline environment to flourish. A rise in pH plays mayhem with our natural infection prevention, further increasing the risk of infection. Once the pH exceeds 6.5, bacterial invasion increases dramatically, a loss of normal skin integrity results and a variety of skin disorders such as eczema, psoriasis and irritant contact dermatitis flare.”

Dehydrated skin can also lead to premature signs of aging, clogged pores, cell damage, and loss of beneficial nutrients. Even if you suffer from oily skin you shouldn’t skip this step. Your skin cells still need fluid between each other; this is what creates an even skin tone and improves elasticity. There are tons of different types of products that will properly hydrate your skin; crèmes, oils, and serums are the most popular. Before I begin I urge you all to remember that stretch marks are nothing to be ashamed of, however if you do want to find ways to diminish stretch marks on your skin, please continue to read.
Stretch marks are completely natural effects on the skin, mostly caused  by an increase in cortisone in the skin, or skin tearing often caused by  rapid changes in the body, such as by hormones, pregnancy, body  building, hormone replacement treatments, weight gain and so on.  They often make their appearance on the skin as off-hue stripes, and  can vary in size and color, as well as time spent on the skin. While  stretch marks are not permanent, if not treated well, they may leave  scarring, so it’s important that while you not only try to treat stretch  marks while they are present on your skin, it’s also very important that you try to prevent them from appearing on the skin in the first place. Doing this mainly entails that you keep your skin moisturized, and hydrated as much as possible, especially during pregnancy where 90% of women experience stretch marks especially during their last trimesters. There are many ways for you to accomplish preventing stretch marks, as well as many ways for treating them, check out our three favorite ways to do this below:

While many of us may take a daily vitamin, there are also a large  number of us who do not. This is because it helps to improve skin elasticity from the inside of your body. Vitamins work as an excellent preventative measure for stretch marks, but they are also an excellent option in treating stretch marks. Luckily most vitamins are fairly affordable, and you can find them virtually anywhere! So no excuses, start taking your vitamins!

I know I know, you hear this a lot and it’s almost like a broken record, but water is the most essential element in preventing skin dryness and maintaining skin elasticity. Like vitamins, the consumption of water works from the inside of your body to keep your skin hydrated and healthy, and not only that, it benefits with a number of other regulatory systems in your body as well. It’s literally the most vital natural resource we can get, and many of us don’t even take much advantage of it, and as a result many of us suffer from dehydration without even realizing it! So fun fact, when you feel thirsty, that’s an indication that your body is already low on water, and when you feel dryness on your lips, a.k.a when you have to search high and low to locate your favorite chap-stick, it also means that your body is low on water. These are 2 daily sensations we experience every day, but we shouldn’t. It’s simple, carry a water bottle with you at all times, and make sure that you drink it all, and refill it at least once every day. While you might have to get up to use the restroom every 15 minutes, it’s well worth it, and not only your skin, but your entire body will thank you!

 L.O.C. help diminish stretch marks

My personal favorite thing to ignore, but also my favorite thing to  apply. I always tend to skip the lotion segment after my showers, just  because it takes an additional 5 minutes that I never want to give up  just to put it on. But as the weather becomes colder, I can see the  effects this has on my skin more and more, and I have quickly  readjusted to a lotion-oil-cream regimen to prevent my skin from  getting any worse. This being said, while lotions can be ignored in the  warmer months (specifically late June to mid-October) because the air  carries moisture during these months, thus making it least likely for us  to experience dryness, it’s extremely non-recommended to skip the  moisture process in the colder months (specifically November-May),  this is because the air is frigid, thus carrying no moisture and often times irritating your skin with bouts of dryness. So it’s important to keep lotions, creams, and oils on deck, especially after taking hot showers in these cold months, because as we do this, we also allow whatever moisture we have in our skin to leave by opening our pores in the steam. This isn’t wrong to do, but in order to replace the moisture that is lost, we must apply the nourishment our skin needs to its surface. Not doing so, can in effect cause tearing in the dermis, and then more stretch marks. So I employ the process of moisturizing called the L.O.C method, and if you haven’t already guessed, it stands for lotions, oils, and creams. This is a method I use because my skin is extremely prone to dryness. So to prevent this, I mix an essential oil (read this post below) with my daily lotion for application after I take my nightly showers, and when I wake up I apply a heavy cream to wear throughout my day. This prevents my skin from feeling flaky or irritated in the cold-windy air throughout my day, and as also keeps my skin extremely soft. In addition, it also helps me to prevent any stretch marks.

So here are my three cardinal rules to taking care of your skin and treating or preventing stretch marks. While many sources reveal that stretch marks are genetic, and if you feel that as a result of this you are more prone to them, I challenge you to try the above methods to at least take preventative measures for your skins appearance. While no one should feel ashamed of having stretch marks; they are something all of us have (whether people care to admit it or not), many of us experience a higher level of confidence when we feel we are able to keep them to a minimum. When it comes to Summer, not only do we get extreme temperatures, but we also get smog. Ever looked at a nice view and noticed a grayish fog or haze? That is smog. Smog occurs because of pollutants in the atmosphere that may be caused by fuels such as nitrogen oxides (that are found in burning gas, natural gas, coal, and oil), carbon monoxide, and many more. According to the organization, Cleaner and Greener, the major air pollution sources are derived from transportation, electricity, other home fuel uses, and goods and services we buy. Not only does our planet get affected by these fuels, but every living person is also affected, both internally and externally. These pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxides damage crops (that we eat), which may cause internal consumption of these chemical. For example, smog and nitrogen oxides creates an effect known as acid rain, so when it rains, the water falling is already polluted, and when it hits the crops, the crops get contaminated, and we eat those contaminated crops. Other internal effects may include lung damage from smog and blood having a more difficult time providing oxygen to cells.

Outdoor Pollution

So how does skin care play into air pollution you ask? Well, many of you might be shocked that air pollution externally affects you, by damaging your skin. According to the New York Times, “Ozone, the toxic gas formed when UV light hits mono-nitrogen oxides (basically, combustion exhaust), is suspected by some to be one of the primary causes of pollution-related skin damage.” The Ozone layer located in the stratosphere (one of five atmosphere layers) is our essential protection against skin cancer because it absorbs UV rays. Although the Ozone works as a shield against UV rays above in the sky, down below on the ground level, the Ozone layer may actual cause lung damage. So how exactly does our skin age faster? Our skin contains certain lipids that help keep our skin firm, however the Ozone layer damages those lipids causing skin damage and speeding up aging. The skin gets damaged due to the loss of oxygen your skin cells are receiving. Although this is normal when it comes to aging, air pollutants and UV radiation speed up the process.

Smog and Smoking

Smog is not the only type of fog, and neither is the smoke from other pollutants the only kind—smoking is a pollutant that damages your skin. According to LIVESTRONG, the process of growing tobacco, as well as consuming it, creates so much pollutants, it’s a hazard to the environment. First, the plant itself requires so many pesticides and herbicides, due to its fragility, thus causing the Ozone layer to deplete because of the chemicals these pesticides and herbicides contain. Such chemicals may even end up in ground water, killing wildlife and even poison people because of contaminated water. Now, these are just the chemicals that are used for growing tobacco, but more chemicals are released into the environment during manufacturing cigarettes. Chemicals such as:

  • Hydrochloric acid
  • Hydrogen fluoride
  • Methyl ethyl ketone
  • Nicotine and nicotine salts
  • Nitric acid
  • Phosphoric acid
  • Sulphuric acid

  • Let’s also not forget the Carbon Dioxide that gets released while transporting (and consuming) the product, using fossil fuels that damage the atmosphere—just to name a few.

Now imagine all of those chemicals going into your mouth as you inhale and exhale a cigarette. The chemicals listed above are not only released into the atmosphere, create liter (cigarette butts are the number one littered item in the U.S.) but they stay in your body, and may lead to skin cancer. Smoking also causes your skin to wrinkle because it narrows your blood vessels due to lack of oxygen. According to HowStuffWorks, “Smoking also damages elastin and collagen, fibers that give skin its elasticity, which cause skin to wrinkle prematurely.” So next time you pick up a cigarette, ask yourself this—is it really worth it? Antioxidants to the Rescue!

According to SELF, “When pollution gets into your skin, it creates free radicals, highly unstable molecules that have unpaired electrons. These molecules [try] to steal an electron from a healthy cell, thereby injuring it.” These electrons therefore damage your collagen, which is essential for firm skin, and creates holes in your cells. You can also find out whether your clothes are properly UPF. According to the Skin Cancer Organization, “UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor. It indicates what fraction of the sun’s ultraviolet rays can penetrate the fabric. A shirt with a UPF of 50, for example, allows just 1/50th of the sun’s UV radiation to reach the skin.” It’s important to know your clothing is protecting sufficiently against air pollutants and UV rays, otherwise you are at a higher chance of skin damage. The Skin Cancer Organization also provides examples of what fabrics to look for depending on the UPF you seek.

 

Sunscreen

Because the Ozone layer is depleting, we are now more than ever exposed to UV rays. It’s important to apply sunscreen every day, even if it’s cloudy outside! Even after getting in the water with “waterproof” sunblock, it never hurts to reapply! According to the Skin Cancer Organization, “To ensure that you get the full SPF of a sunscreen, you need to apply 1 oz – about a shot glass full. Studies show that most people apply only half to a quarter of that amount, which means the actual SPF they have on their body is lower than advertised. During a long day at the beach, one person should use around one half to one quarter of an 8 oz. bottle. Why wear sunblock?

Although global warming is a separate issue at hand, it individually affects us because of our skin’s reaction to the extent of the ozone layer letting in more rays that may potentially cause more damage to our skin now more than ever. Therefore, wearing sunblock is essential and should be worn everyday because every season fluctuates as the ozone layer continues to diminish. Everyone should also be well aware of the permanent damage to your skin—skin cancer. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, “each year there are more new cases of skin cancer than the combined incidence of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon.” It is more likely for someone to get skin cancer, than any other form of skin cancer, meaning the protection of our skin needs to be a priority for every single person. Although every skin tone and skin type is likely to get discoloration and hyperpigmentation on the skin, dark skin is more likely to get hyperpigmentation on the skin, compared to other skin tones because of the melanin levels that dark skin tones contain. So the myth that “the darker the skin, the less you need to wear sunscreen” is false! Everyone, especially dark skin tones should be wearing sunblock. Women’s Health states, “Black skin has the equivalent of about an SPF 13.4 (compared with 3.4 for white skin).” So although the minimum SPF worn should be SPF 15, it is better safe than sorry to wear sunblock because our skin needs to be protected, and sometimes, our skin may not be enough to get the job done. Lastly, let’s not forget that sun damage creates premature aging, and although aging skin is beautiful, many would love to prolong visible signs of aging. CNN explains that “regular sunscreen use protects against photoaging: the wrinkling, spotting and loss of elasticity caused by exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet radiation.” So again, the amount of sunscreen worn and wearing it earlier in life benefits skin from aging at a faster rate. What kind of sunscreen and other sun protection should I use?

Although the face and body tends to be the number one priority for sunblock, it’s not the only part of the body that gets sun damage. Apart from applying sunblock, on the body, there should be protection from the very roots of your hair, all the way down to the toes on your feet. Although it hardly ever gets mentioned, there are actual hair products that contain SPF! However, like makeup products, the lighter the SPF the higher the amount of application is needed, so if necessary, one can never go wrong with hat. If hats are still not convincing, look into cold showers and shower filters. When it comes to the water used for showering, in most cases it contains chlorine that damage hair, therefore reducing nutrients needed to protect hair follicles fro
m the sun. A filter would then strip chlorine from the water, so just try using cold water when conditioning, and everything else will be good to go! In regards to feet, dermatologist Leslie Baumann also explains on www.youbeauty.com that “’The skin on the tops of the feet is thinner than the skin on legs,’ swoman-1149965_1920he explains. ’Sun damage here can range from rough texture and fine lines to pigment changes.’ If you spent most of your youth running around outside while barefoot, you can start to see premature aging as early as your 20s” Apart from other weird places to get sun damage, Baumann explains that feet can also get premature aging characteristics, which is why sunscreen is essential when wearing revealing shoes. It’s also easier to get sunburnt feet because of the skin is much thinner there, causing feet to be a lot more sensitive to the sun. Any kind of sunscreen can be used for feet, however, since it is a lot thinner skin, the higher the better! The world is seen through beautiful eyes, so protect them with sunglasses! Newer preparations, however, tend to be micronized, which means the particles are small enough to allow them to blend in and disappear into the skin. Chemical sunscreens are also an option; look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15+.”
