Did you know that having a great skin care routine is the foundation for smooth makeup application and clear and healthy skin?
We’ve all had those days when our makeup won’t settle right, leaving our face looking dull and tired. This is usually due to a missing link in our skin care routine.
We’ve compiled 5 of our favorite ways to achieve and maintain clear and healthy skin.
#1. Choosing the right cleanser for your skin
We have all suffered through the pain of choosing a new skin cleanser especially while standing in the middle of the skin care aisle surrounded by tons of different types claiming to make your skin look flawless. Unfortunately, not all cleansers are created equal. Sometimes they leave your skin dry and irritated or can even make the problem worse! This is usually due to an imbalance in your skins Ph levels. If the cleanser increases your pH levels, making it alkaline, it can create a optimal living conditions for bacteria, causing major breakouts on your skin. Here is a mini crash course of the effects of unbalanced pH levels provided by Audrey Kunin MD:
According to Audrey Kunin MD via Dr. Oz:
“The epidermis is protected by an external layer of tightly knit cells arranged like shingles on a roof. Any disruption to the acid mantle, elevating overall skin pH, interferes with this protective barrier, wrenching cells away from each other and results in dehydration, roughness, irritation and noticeable flaking. Skin is left defenseless and susceptible to further environmental damage.
As cells pull apart, minute breaks become exposed, leaving skin more vulnerable to bacterial invasion. Under normal circumstances, bacteria not only have a difficult time penetrating through the shield-like structure of the skin and the acid mantle also creates a hostile environment for bacteria which prefer an alkaline environment to flourish. A rise in pH plays mayhem with our natural infection prevention, further increasing the risk of infection. Once the pH exceeds 6.5, bacterial invasion increases dramatically, a loss of normal skin integrity results and a variety of skin disorders such as eczema, psoriasis and irritant contact dermatitis flare.”
Clear Essence offers two great cleansers from our Platinum skin care line; our Extra Strength Medicated Cleansing Bar, and our Blemish Control Wash. Both cleanse the skin of dirt and bacteria without upsetting the skins pH levels, successfully fighting away bacteria causing acne.
#2. Exfoliate for clean and healthy skin!
An overabundance of dead skin cells is a huge culprit in why our makeup doesn’t sit properly on our skin. Exfoliating gets rid of all the buildup of dead skin cells sitting on top of your live healthy skin. You’ll notice that after having exfoliated, you’re skin will look much brighter and feel 10x smoother. We recommend any of our face and body soap bars. Each is tailored to specific skin problems; such as acne, sensitivity, dry and oily skin. Our best seller, the Medicated Cleansing Bar is great for people who suffer from acne and oily skin.
#3 Moisturize! Moisturize! Moisturize!
We cannot stress this step enough! Moisturizing is an extremely important part of healthy glowing skin. Our skin dehydrates throughout the day leaving it looking dull and lusterless. Dehydrated skin can also lead to premature signs of aging, clogged pores, cell damage, and loss of beneficial nutrients. Even if you suffer from oily skin you shouldn’t skip this step. Your skin cells still need fluid between each other; this is what creates an even skin tone and improves elasticity. There are tons of different types of products that will properly hydrate your skin; crèmes, oils, and serums are the most popular. We carry all three in two of our most popular skin care lines, the Platinum Series and Vitamin C Series. Oils penetrate much deeper than crèmes allowing it to help balance out natural oil production of the skin. So even if you have oily skin, don’t be afraid to try it out! Crèmes should be made of natural ingredients since this will be sitting closer to the top of the skin and it is what your skin feeds off when it is feeling thirsty. This especially happens at night while the skin is repairing itself from the days activities. Serums are great for sensitive skin and help with specific skin problems such as pimples, wrinkles, dark spots or to prevent the signs of aging. Serums are extremely effective because they also penetrate deep into the skin but light enough so that you are still able to (and should) apply a crème moisturizer over it.
What is toning? Toner is a product that helps close your pores after having opened them in the last steps. After having applied your products we don’t want to leave our pores open, this allows for dirt and bacteria to enter freshly opened pores and causing breakouts. Our Lemon Plus Vitamin C Multi-Active Toner is perfect for closing them up after cleaning them out! It also balances out the pH levels of your skin while taking off the last of the impurities on your face. The Vitamin C also helps even out your skin tone leaving fresh clean and healthy skin!
Protecting our skin is a step most of us tend to forget. Sunscreen is extremely important even if the sun isn’t out shinning bright. Harmful UV rays are always hitting our skin, just some days they are more or less prominent than others. Sun damage can lead to dark spots, premature signs of aging, and even skin cancer. By providing your skin with protection against harmful UV rays you prevent all of these things, plus it helps reduce the appearance of facial red veins and blotchiness, giving you an all around even skin tone. We know that adding a whole other step to our skin care and makeup routine is the last thing we want to do, so that is why we offer SPF in a few of our products! One of our best sellers is the Medicated Fade Crème which offers SPF 15 protection against both UVA and UVB rays. This works wonders on treating previous sun damage while also protecting it against future dark spots, all while providing your skin with the moisture and hydration it needs to look its very best.
If you follow these five simple steps you will be on your way to radiant, clean and healthy skin in no time!
We’ve all had those days when our makeup won’t settle right, leaving our face looking dull and tired. This is usually due to a missing link in our skin care routine.
When it comes to Summer, not only do we get extreme temperatures, but we also get smog. Smog occurs because of pollutants in the atmosphere that may be caused by fuels such as nitrogen oxides (that are found in burning gas, natural gas, coal, and oil), carbon monoxide, and many more. Major air pollution sources are derived from transportation, electricity, other home fuel uses, and goods and services we buy. Unfortunately anti-pollution skin care is a reality for most everyone in the world due to these toxics affecting our air quality. Not only does our planet get affected by these fuels, but every living person is also affected, both internally and externally. These pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxides damage crops (that we eat), which may cause internal consumption of these chemical. For example, smog and nitrogen oxides creates an effect known as acid rain, so when it rains, the water falling is already polluted, and when it hits the crops, the crops get contaminated, and we eat those contaminated crops. Other internal effects may include lung damage from smog and blood having a more difficult time providing oxygen to cells.
So how does skin care play into air pollution you ask? Well, many of you might be shocked that air pollution externally affects you, by damaging your skin. According to the New York Times, “Ozone, the toxic gas formed when UV light hits mono-nitrogen oxides (basically, combustion exhaust), is suspected by some to be one of the primary causes of pollution-related skin damage.” The Ozone layer located in the stratosphere (one of five atmosphere layers) is our essential protection against skin cancer because it absorbs UV rays. Although the Ozone works as a shield against UV rays above in the sky, down below on the ground level, the Ozone layer may actual cause lung damage. So how exactly does our skin age faster? Our skin contains certain lipids that help keep our skin firm, however the Ozone layer damages those lipids causing skin damage and speeding up aging. The skin gets damaged due to the loss of oxygen your skin cells are receiving. Although this is normal when it comes to aging, air pollutants and UV radiation speed up the process.
Smog and Smoking
Smog is not the only type of fog, and neither is the smoke from other pollutants the only kind—smoking is a pollutant that damages your skin. According to LIVESTRONG, the process of growing tobacco, as well as consuming it, creates so much pollutants, it’s a hazard to the environment. First, the plant itself requires so many pesticides and herbicides, due to its fragility, thus causing the Ozone layer to deplete because of the chemicals these pesticides and herbicides contain. Such chemicals may even end up in ground water, killing wildlife and even poison people because of contaminated water. Now, these are just the chemicals that are used for growing tobacco, but more chemicals are released into the environment during manufacturing cigarettes. Chemicals such as:
- Ethylene glycol
- Hydrochloric acid
- Hydrogen fluoride
- Methyl ethyl ketone
- Nicotine and nicotine salts
- Nitric acid
- Phosphoric acid
- Sulphuric acid
- Let’s also not forget the Carbon Dioxide that gets released while transporting (and consuming) the product, using fossil fuels that damage the atmosphere—just to name a few.
Now imagine all of those chemicals going into your mouth as you inhale and exhale a cigarette. The chemicals listed above are not only released into the atmosphere, create liter (cigarette butts are the number one littered item in the U.S.) but they stay in your body, and may lead to skin cancer. Smoking also causes your skin to wrinkle because it narrows your blood vessels due to lack of oxygen. According to HowStuffWorks, “Smoking also damages elastin and collagen, fibers that give skin its elasticity, which cause skin to wrinkle prematurely.” So next time you pick up a cigarette, ask yourself this—is it really worth it? If smoking is a stress reliever, here are other options to deal with stress, check out this collection of Cat-Stress-Relievers that Buzzfeed has compiled!
Anti-Pollution Skin Care: Shield Your Skin
It takes a large amount of people, corporations, and politicians to come together and find a solution to defeat air pollution, in the meanwhile, you can learn how to shield your skin from air pollutants!
Wash Your Face
Washing your face should not only be a part of your anti-pollution skin care routine, but learning to wash your face every single day, and if possible, day and night, is going to help you keep your face clean from chemicals and pollutants. By washing your face, you’re preventing your skin from irritation and dryness from pollutants. Here’s a list of possible products to use to not only keep your face clean after washing, but also to help with dryness from pollutants!

This crème has a specially blended formula with antioxidants that help maintain your skin looking young and stay moisturized. Use it with the My Natural Beauty Skin Tone Olive Oil Soap for added hydration and clean looking skin!
Antioxidants to the Rescue!
According to SELF, “When pollution gets into your skin, it creates free radicals, highly unstable molecules that have unpaired electrons. These molecules [try] to steal an electron from a healthy cell, thereby injuring it.” These electrons therefore damage your collagen, which is essential for firm skin, and creates holes in your cells. This can lead to possible hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, and acne from increased inflammation. Apply serums with antioxidants such as Vitamin C, in order to ensure your skin cells have the proper nutrients to prevent free radicals damage. Here are a couple of ways to pack in those antioxidants:
- Eat Foods That Have Antioxidants—eating foods such as wild berries, dark chocolate, pecans, kidney beans, cranberries, blackberries, cilantro, and even green tea, is going to help
- Try the Clear Essence Lemon Plus Vitamin C Skin Care Line—The Lemon Vitamin C skin care series is made with a natural blend of vitamin c, fruit acids, emollients, and extracts of lemon, licorice, ginseng, gentian, aloe, green tea and sea kelp. Our Lemon Vitamin C line is natural skin care from nature, as it is a non-hydroquinone based treatment for excessive pigmentation in people of color. If you have a job that requires to be out in the sun all day, or you know you’ll be out all day, try covering up your skin with long sleeves and a hat in order to protect your skin from being in contact with air pollutants! You can also find out whether your clothes are properly UPF. According to the Skin Cancer Organization, “UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor. It indicates what fraction of the sun’s ultraviolet rays can penetrate the fabric. A shirt with a UPF of 50, for example, allows just 1/50th of the sun’s UV radiation to reach the skin.” It’s important to know your clothing is protecting sufficiently against air pollutants and UV rays, otherwise you are at a higher chance of skin damage. The Skin Cancer Organization also provides examples of what fabrics to look for depending on the UPF you seek.
Because the Ozone layer is depleting, we are now more than ever exposed to UV rays. It’s important to apply sunscreen every day, even if it’s cloudy outside! Try our Clear Essence Platinum Skin Beautifying Milk with SPF 15, which helps keep your body moisturized and protected from any harmful UVA/UVB rays and still help fade discoloration from previous harsh sun exposure. Protecting yourself from UV rays is not only going to help you keep your skin healthy, but it’s also going to prevent your skin from hyperpigmentation, and uneven skin tone.
When it comes to Summer, not only do we get extreme temperatures, but we also get smog. In order to truly create radiant and beautiful skin, you have to know certain aspects of your skin, such as your skin type and your skin tone. It’s important to know these aspects about your skin, not only to find the perfect skin care products, but your skin type and skin tone may react differently to the sun, make up products, and also what hair colors, or jewelry, compliments your skin tone.
So the first thing you want to know is what kind of skin type you have. Your skin type does not stay the same as you age, in fact the younger you are the more “normal your skin type is. There are about 5 major skin types, and may be caused by certain bad habits:
- Normal Skin
Normal skin has little to no blemishes or imperfections, and tends to be glowing. Pores are not as visible, and is rarely sensitive.
Although age may have something to do with normal skin, using the right products may lead to a balanced skin complexion, unless you have really perfect genetics!
Although you may like the way your skin looks, you want to maintain your skin looking flawless. So knowing what kind of products your skin is comfortable with is a plus. Try using the Clear Essence My Natural Beauty Skin Tone Olive Oil Soap, followed by the My Natural Beauty Skin Tone Olive Oil Body Crème to keep maintaining a radiant and even toned complexion. We also offer other products for Normal skin, which you may check out here. If you have Normal skin but are worried about preventing wrinkles, you may also want to try the Clear Essence Anti-Aging Complexion Soap with Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA). The AHA works to clear dead skin cells and moisturizes skin as it cleanses.
- Combination Skin
For combination skin, your T-zone (nose, forehead, and chin) is more likely to be oily, whereas the rest of your face may be dry or normal. Your pores are more than likely to appear larger because they’re more open, and are also more prone to having shiny skin. Combination skin tends to be the most common type of skin.
According to Paula’s Choice, genetics may be the most common reason for combination skin, but you might also want to take a look at the products you’re applying. You want to make sure that the ingredients in the products help balance your skin out.
For Combination skin, you want to look for products that are either good for all skin types or use oily or dry skin products only for those specific areas. We recommend focusing on oily dark spots with the Clear Essence Platinum Line Skin Lightening Serum, while using the Clear Essence Platinum Line Medicated Fade Crème for dry areas. You may also notice that some of our products such as the Clear Essence Platinum Line Skin Beautifying Milk can be used for all skin types in order to help create a radiant complexion by fading dark spots and skin discolorations.
- Dry Skin
Though your pores may not be visible, you might havered patches, and a dull skin complexion. Your skin’s elasticity is very low which can create more visible lines.
According to WebMD, certain factors to consider on why you have dry skin may have to do with aging, heredity, weather such as too much sun exposure, wind, or cold temperatures. Too much tanning may also lead to dry skin damage and certain ingredients in skin care products may lead to such skin conditions.
Using a moisturizer will help bring elasticity back into your skin, and may want to be applied more than twice a day, or whenever you feel your skin dry. Use the Clear Essence Skin Beautifying Milk in order to prevent and heal cracked and dry skin. Another product to consider is a misting spray with ingredients such as rosewater in order to refresh your skin. For more of our Dry Skin products, check this page out!
- Oily Skin
Your pores appear larger with oily skin, causing shiny or dull complexions. Oily skin is also more prone to blackheads and pimples.
Oily skin can also change depending on the weather, such as dry skin. Some other factors to consider may be stress, heat.
In order to prevent Oily skin, a major factor to consider is tightening up your pores. The more open your pores are, the more bacteria and oils can clogged your pores which may lead to acne. Also, popping a pimple or touching your face may lead to more acne, so don’t touch your face! Try cleansing with the Clear Essence Platinum Line Medicated Cleansing Bar which is effective in removing excess bacteria, dirt and oils. Follow up with the Clear Essence Platinum Line Skin Lightening Serum to tighten up pores to prevent future clogged pores, and follow up with a moisturizer. For more oily skin products check our oily skin page.
- Sensitive Skin
Signs of sensitive skin may occur with redness or irritation, or even a burning sensation.
Most of the time, such symptoms are caused by chemical reactions, or ingredients in home care products or skin care products.
Knowing what products are causing irritation is a must. After knowing what works for your skin, use products that have more natural extracts, such as the Clear Essence Lemon Plus Vitamin C Skin Care Line, or using the My Natural Beauty Skin Tone Olive Oil Soap and the My Natural Beauty Skin Tone Olive Oil Body Crème in order to help out with dryness that occurs from sensitive skin. You can check out more of our recommended products for sensitive skin here!
Our skin type helps identify how certain products may affect us, but knowing your skin tone also helps protect and prevent your skin from future damage and of course let’s not forget about fashion and beauty and how certain colors help your natural beauty. According to wikiHow, “Your skin tone is determined by the amount of melanin, or pigment, in your skin and does not change from sun exposure or skin conditions like rosacea or acne.” In other words, your skin tone isn’t based off of your actual skin color, but more about, what’s going on inside of your skin that produces its tone. The darker the skin tone, the higher amount of melanin, which helps protect the skin from harmful UV rays. MAKEUP.com provides 5 of the most common skin tone categories which are:
Skin tone may easily be confused with undertone, which is determined by three aspects: cool, neutral, or warm. Undertone is helpful in finding the right beauty products such as foundation, nail polish, colors of clothing that make you stand out more, and even hair. Not sure what your undertone is? POPSUGAR has an easy quiz that’ll help you find out!
Protecting Your Skin
Above all, no matter what your skin type or skin tone is, a basic necessity for your skin to be protected is SPF. By using sunscreen, not only are you preventing excess dryness, and skin damage, but you’re also helping prevent sunspots and discolorations from occurring. Knowing what kind of SPF based off of your skin tones, is going to help you not only determine how strong the SPF should be but how often you should be reapplying. Use the Fitzpatrick skin quiz, provided by the Skin Cancer Organization to help identify how much SPF you need. Now, depending the SPF, you may have to apply sunscreen more than once throughout the day. The smaller the SPF the more often you have to reapply, so if you have a lotion or make up with SPF 15, then you’ll need to reapply every two hours. However, if you have SPF 30 or higher, you can get away with a couple of more hours, but always remember to reapply! Even after getting in the water with “waterproof” sunblock, it never hurts to reapply! According to the Skin Cancer Organization, “To ensure that you get the full SPF of a sunscreen, you need to apply 1 oz – about a shot glass full. Studies show that most people apply only half to a quarter of that amount, which means the actual SPF they have on their body is lower than advertised. During a long day at the beach, one person should use around one half to one quarter of an 8 oz. bottle. Sunscreens should be applied 30 minutes before sun exposure to allow the ingredients to fully bind to the skin.” Therefore, knowing the proper amount of sunscreen to use is not only going to help your natural beauty, but it’s going to keep it from aging faster!
Determining Your SPF for Every Skin Type
Now that you know what kind of SPF to use, knowing which sunscreen products to look for based off your skin type, is going to help you from preventing blemishes caused by sunscreen products. Sunscreen may cause oily skin to get even more excessive oils, so knowing what ingredients to look for is going to help your skin inside and out!
Normal Skin/All types:
Any sunscreen can be used for normal skin, but if you’re looking for one that will improve your skin’s elasticity, then check for a sunscreen that contains niacinamide, which helps uneven skin tones! Sunscreens that also contain zinc and titanium oxide will help cover you from any UV ray!
Dry Skin/Sensitive Skin:
Since dry skin can be prone to sensitivity, opt for a sunscreen that helps hydrate, and moisture, so the creamier/thicker, the better!
Since dry skin needs creamier then, oily skin means the opposite. Opt for gel based sunblocks which tend to be oil-free!
Clear Essence SPF Products
Sunscreen is always a major component to ensure the erasure of dark spots and getting a radiant and even toned-complexion, so we offer some products with an SPF 15 based formula! Here is a list for you to check out!
Although sunscreens create an “ashy look” on darker skin tones, that shouldn’t stop you from applying! According to Glamour, Dr. Zeichner states, “The right formula should be light, easy to spread, and should absorb fully into the skin so you don’t see it.” Another note to add on sunscreens is spray on sunscreens. Though they are effective, the trick is finding out whether you put on the right amount. If you wish to apply spray sunscreen, just remember: be aware of the dangers of accidental inhalation, and make sure to rub in the sunscreen once you spray it on! If you’re not sure about what sunscreen to use because you have sensitive skin, Positive Health Wellness has some great tips for not only using the proper products for sensitive skin, but also ways to create your own sunscreen!

We all live our lives differently, which means that depending on our schedules, some of us may have more time for our skin care than others. Depending the way we live affects the way our skin reacts to certain situations, such as sleep deprivation, or too much junk food, and so on. Knowing what causes your skin to get blemishes or dark spots is important to not only prevent further blemishes, but it helps knowing how it affects your skin, but your body as well. By knowing the consequences of certain lifestyles or daily routines, you’ll be able to speed up the process in achieving clearer skin.
There’s nothing like having a good night’s rest that will not only make you feel more relaxed the next day, but also having your skin rejuvenate. According to EverydayHealth, “A good night’s sleep can mean good skin health because when you’re sleep-deprived, your body makes more of the stress hormone cortisol. Elevated levels of cortisol can lead to increased stress and inflammation in the body, hurting your skin’s quality.” In other words, staying up and doing “all nighters” or simply not sleeping comfortably may produce more cortisol which causes more stress, and what does stress lead to? Acne. While you’re dreaming, your body is basically rehydrating itself, from your skin all the way down to your internal organs, so if you don’t get enough sleep, then your body becomes inmbalance. You could possibly lose that radiant glow on your face and giving you puffy eye bags, paleness, dark circles, and even wrinkles. And even if you use our Clear Essence Platinum Line Skin Lightening Serum for your dark circles, you won’t be able to see results unless you make changes to your sleep schedule! Cosmopolitan even emphasizes the need for sleep as not only a nourishment for your face and body, but for your brain as well. Cardellino states, “Sleep is food for your brain, body, and skin, and if you don’t get enough, you deprive each of its nourishment. ‘During a good night’s rest, your body works to remove dead blood cells and dead brain cells, and clears the pathways for new synapses to take place so that new blood and brain cells can replace old ones,’ says sleep expert Rebecca S. Robbins, M.D., Ph.D., researcher at Cornell University, and author of Sleep for Success!. ‘Your brain also gets rid of 60 percent more toxins when you get the proper amount of sleep,’ she adds. Overall, this helps you feel more refreshed when you get up, able to think more clearly, and gives your skin that I-woke-up-like-this #glowing look.” Cardellino continues to go down the list and even mentions that your cellphone also is not only a distraction for getting your proper beauty sleep, but even on low light, your cellphone is damaging your skin, stating that the light that gives off, reenergizes your skin and eyes, because it’s the same light that comes from the sun and EverydayHealth also offers these tips in helping you get the proper sleep you deserve:
- Don’t eat a big meal too late in the day.
- Drink plenty of water throughout the day, but not late at night.
- Sleep under a warm blanket in a cool, dark, quiet room.
- Keep electronics out of the bedroom.
- Use breathable cotton sheets and wash them regularly, so they don’t collect dust mites and bacteria.
- Use laundry detergents that don’t have strong fragrances, which can be irritating to skin.
Let’s face it, after coming home from a fun night, or from work we’re sometimes too tired to do anything, even removing our make up before bed. But, if you’re able to brush your teeth, then you’re able to remove your make up. According to ELLE, “One of the biggest mistakes women make is not properly cleansing and removing makeup at night. This clogs oil glands and impacts your makeup into your pores, which makes them appear larger. When your collagen levels decline as you get older, your pores will not snap back after becoming enlarged. Additionally, leftover makeup can lead to inflammation, which can generate free radicals and lead to breakouts.” It’s also recommended to invest in makeup remover wipes, not just to use before you cleanse, but if you don’t have time to wash your face, then at least use a wipe so you won’t sleep with loads of make up on. Try using the Clear Essence Platinum Line Medicated Cleansing Bar, which not only helps clean your face from bacteria and oils from clogging up, but it’s a simple routine to use daily and is good for all skin types. It’s so simple to use, that you’ll never go to bed with makeup again! Another note to add is that the application of makeup may also affect your skin’s pores and blemish control. For starters, you want to make sure that you are applying the thinnest products first and then work your way to the thicker products. By doing so, you’re letting your make up set right and this tip also goes for your beauty regime, so that pores won’t stay clogged. In order to prevent dryness and uneven skin tone, you must apply sunscreen before your make up—always. In fact, even if you don’t wear makeup, you should still be wearing sunscreen regardless. You also want to make sure that using beauty products that are old should be thrown out. This can be tricky since makeup industries never seem to have clear expiration dates on their products, but here’s a guide by MAKEUP.com which perfectly sums up how long we should be using certain products:
- Mascara—3 Months
- Liquid liners—6 Months
- Foundation—6 Months
- Lipgloss—1 Year
- Concealer—1 Year
- Nail Polish—2 Years
- Lipstick—2 Years
- Powders—2 Years
- Eye Shadow/ Bronzer/ Blush—2 years
If you wish to seek clearer and healthier skin then
step away from the junk food! Like sleep deprivation and makeup, excessive junk foo
d may lead to acne prone skin to react to the toxins by breaking out even more! Mayo Clinic states, “A diet high in processed or refined carbohydrates and unhealthy fats promotes skin aging.” Try adding more foods that are healthy for your skin which not only will give you a nice glow, but it also helps support your skin in protecting and fighting off bacteria from entering into your body when you get cuts or blemishes. Eating healthy can also help support your skin during the summer where not only is sunscreen even more required, but high temperatures, means dry skin, so eat food that will reduce dryness and prevent aging. If you already have dry skin, then not only will changing your diet help, but using our Clear Essence Platinum Line Beautifying Milk will help not only with dryness, but even out your skin tone, leaving you with an even toned glow! But clear skin starts from the inside out, so knowing what your skin relies heavily on should help you get started on how to protect your skin—with water. Our skin is mostly made up of water, so the more water you drink, the more hydrated your skin stays, plus it helps flush away any toxins, so drink up! Another basic necessity that should be in your diet is fruit and vegetables. Though there may be a lot to choose from, certain fruits and veggies help your skin differently. Healthy Ambition offers a list on the specifics of what certain foods help your skin such as:
- Get Glowing Skin with Chocolate
Cocoa not only gives you a nice glow, but eating dark chocolate has a high level of antioxidants, where if you were to apply it on your face, it temporarily reduces puffiness.
- Yogurt Prevents Wrinkles
To be specific, Greek yogurt helps skin stay firm which helps prevent lines on the face.
- Protect Your Face with Pomegranate
Pomegranate has polyphenol antioxidants which help regulate blood flow in the skin giving it that natural blush. You can also use this fruit as a moisturizer and helps focus on reducing wrinkles.
- Get Soft Skin with Walnuts
Walnuts help even out skin texture and helps produce more collagen production.
Not only can you use bell peppers, but specifically green and yellow veggies help prevent wrinkles, especially around the eyes. Eating these types of veggies also help sensitive skin with sun exposure.
- Eat Sunflower Seeds for a Brighter Complexion
Sunflower seed help you protect your skin from the sun because of the Vitamin E the seeds contain.
- Eat Kidney Beans to Fade Blemishes
Kidney beans have a high amount of zinc, which helps prevent blemishes. Zinc contain sources that help heal skin.
- Get Even Skin Tone with Soy
Soy contains protein that helps reduce hyperpigmentation, so substitute your cup of milk with soy milk or eat edamame!
- Stay Young with Oatmeal
Oatmeal requires less processing which means most of the vitamins stay in the oatmeal and go into your body, which helps keep blood sugar stable. Keeping your blood sugar stable helps prevent the creation of excess hormones which can lead to wrinkles.
- Use Green Tea to Reduce Redness
Green tea has antioxidants that not only help reduce redness, but you can also apply it to your face to calm eye puffiness.
Although this list is quite extensive, there’s tons more of foods that not only help your skin stay energized but they help your mind stay sharp too! Cosmopolitan compiled another list of foods that help benefit your skin which you can check out, but you get the idea—the options are endless and the benefits are not only beneficial for your skin but your body and mind as well!
When it comes to taking care of your skin, your skin reacts to certain lifestyle choices. Of course there will be days where you fall asleep late because of studying exams, sometimes it has to be done. But know that not only doing “all nighters” on a daily basis harmful to your skin, but it can also throw off your body physically and mentally. Moderation is the key to not only perfect skin but a lifestyle that will help stay glowing physically and internally. If you do stay up late, don’t forget to wash your face! Remember, leaving make up overnight will instantly be regretted later when your pores clog up and blemishes appear! Just like how you brush your teeth at night, you should be washing your face. Lastly, you are in control of what you eat, so if you want to stop seeing blemishes, start with what you eat! Your body is a temple and should be taken care of, start with the inside and work your way out! These lifestyles not only affect your energy, but your energy also affects your confidence within your own temple. Take charge of your body and let the real you shine through! The difference will be clear.
We all live our lives differently, which means that depending on our schedules, some of us may have more time for our skin care than others. Depending the way we live affects the way our skin reacts to certain situations, such as sleep deprivation, or too much junk food, and so on. Knowing what causes […]
When it comes to summer, sales of sunblock dramatically increase due to the presence of the sun; it’s the time of the year that sunblock should be worn. But, did it ever occur to you that maybe sunblock should be applied every day of the year? Although summer is supposed to be the hottest time of the year and Earth is closer to the sun, the sun still shines every day, so why not wear sunblock every day? And even when the sun doesn’t shine, there are other factors that cause damage to our skin. Therefore, it is important to use sunscreen, not just in in the summer, but every single day of the year, even when it’s cold out, because beautiful, radiant, and healthy skin depends upon it.
Why wear sunblock?
The obvious reason to wear sunblock is to prevent damaging our skin, however, there are certain myths that prevent people from applying sunblock. According to Huffington Post Dr. Wendy Roberts, a board certified dermatopathologist, states the benefits of sunblock such as:
“1. The ozone layer is depleting and your body needs shielding from harmful rays.
- Skin cancer rates are on the rise and sunscreen has been proven to decrease the development of skin cancer.
- It helps to prevent facial brown spots and skin discolorations.
- It slows down the development of wrinkled, premature aging skin.”
Although global warming is a separate issue at hand, it individually affects us because of our skin’s reaction to the extent of the ozone layer letting in more rays that may potentially cause more damage to our skin now more than ever. Therefore, wearing sunblock is essential and should be worn everyday because every season fluctuates as the ozone layer continues to diminish. Everyone should also be well aware of the permanent damage to your skin—skin cancer. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, “each year there are more new cases of skin cancer than the combined incidence of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon.” It is more likely for someone to get skin cancer, than any other form of skin cancer, meaning the protection of our skin needs to be a priority for every single person. By being aware of the risks of skin cancer, such awareness can help save someone’s life, from possible skin cancers such as melanoma; so start applying! Another benefit from skin cancer, as mentioned from Dr. Roberts is the prevention from dark spots and discolorations. Although discolorations do not exactly harm your skin, it does take a long time for the discolorations to go away, therefore by using sunscreen, there is no need to even worry about such spots. However, according to www.newbeauty.com:
“Hyperpigmentation can affect all skin tones—but it runs rampant in those with darker skin. The reason: the darker the skin, the more active the melanocytes are because of naturally high melanin levels. ‘The cause of it doesn’t influence the severity of your discoloration but the severity of your hyperpigmentation is shaped by your skin tone,’ says Washington, D.C., dermatologist Elizabeth Tanzi, MD.”
Although every skin tone and skin type is likely to get discoloration and hyperpigmentation on the skin, dark skin is more likely to get hyperpigmentation on the skin, compared to other skin tones because of the melanin levels that dark skin tones contain. So the myth that “the darker the skin, the less you need to wear sunscreen” is false! Everyone, especially dark skin tones should be wearing sunblock. Women’s Health states, “Black skin has the equivalent of about an SPF 13.4 (compared with 3.4 for white skin).” So although the minimum SPF worn should be SPF 15, it is better safe than sorry to wear sunblock because our skin needs to be protected, and sometimes, our skin may not be enough to get the job done. Lastly, let’s not forget that sun damage creates premature aging, and although aging skin is beautiful, many would love to prolong visible signs of aging. CNN explains that “regular sunscreen use protects against photoaging: the wrinkling, spotting and loss of elasticity caused by exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet radiation.” So again, the amount of sunscreen worn and wearing it earlier in life benefits skin from aging at a faster rate. So now that that’s out of the way, let’s look at the types of sunscreen that are provided to us.
What kind of sunscreen and other sun protection should I use?
Although the face and body tends to be the number one priority for sunblock, it’s not the only part of the body that gets sun damage. Apart from applying sunblock, on the body, there should be protection from the very roots of your hair, all the way down to the toes on your feet. Although a hat would be best recommended, in the instance where a hat is not the best accessory for the outfit of the day, Essence has provided tips for protecting your hair for preventing sun damage such as:
“1. Use SPF! Use hair products with SPF in them, they will coat the cuticle in order to shield from harsh rays. Be sure to use a clarifying shampoo once a week to get rid of any build up.
- Try Shower Filters! Some of our showers have chlorine in them, try adding a shower filter for when you are washing your hair. The chlorine will strip hair of the moisture it needs to stay healthy.
- Rinse With Cold Water“After you condition or co-wash, rinse with cold water to close the cuticle, that way nothing can penetrate the cuticle to damage the hair,” says Redway.”
Although it hardly ever gets mentioned, there are actual hair products that contain SPF! However, like makeup products, the lighter the SPF the higher the amount of application is needed, so if necessary, one can never go wrong with hat. If hats are still not convincing, look into cold showers and shower filters. When it comes to the water used for showering, in most cases it contains chlorine that damage hair, therefore reducing nutrients needed to protect hair follicles fro
m the sun. A filter would then strip chlorine from the water, so just try using cold water when conditioning, and everything else will be good to go! In regards to feet, dermatologist Leslie Baumann also explains on www.youbeauty.com that “’The skin on the tops of the feet is thinner than the skin on legs,’ she explains. ’Sun damage here can range from rough texture and fine lines to pigment changes.’ If you spent most of your youth running around outside while barefoot, you can start to see premature aging as early as your 20s” Apart from other weird places to get sun damage, Baumann explains that feet can also get premature aging characteristics, which is why sunscreen is essential when wearing revealing shoes. It’s also easier to get sunburnt feet because of the skin is much thinner there, causing feet to be a lot more sensitive to the sun. Any kind of sunscreen can be used for feet, however, since it is a lot thinner skin, the higher the better! The world is seen through beautiful eyes, so protect them with sunglasses! Eyes are also at risk of eyelid cancer when not protected accordingly. Of course, many know that sunglasses are the best accessory to add to any outfit! Still not sure about what kind of sunscreen to use on your body? Check out Michelle Phan’s Guide to Sunscreen, which explains what to look for depending skin tone and skin type. However, the Skin Cancer Organization emphasizes that though darker skins tend to have that “chalky” characteristic when applying sunblock, the organization explains
“Darker-skinned people may also be wary of using physical sunscreens, especially titanium-based products, because they can look chalky and white on the skin. Newer preparations, however, tend to be micronized, which means the particles are small enough to allow them to blend in and disappear into the skin. Chemical sunscreens are also an option; look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15+.”
Therefore, when it comes down to shopping for a sunscreen, choose a product that’s uniquely crafted based off the skin tone and skin type that best fits. If still unsure, feel free to consult with a physician, or dermatologist.
When should I use it?
Again, there’s a myth that summer is the only time to use sunscreen, but in reality, it should be used 365 days a year. Every season though, winter can be cold and snowy, should have sunblock included in a beauty regime. Why? According to Vogue, dermatologist Dendy Engelman, found that “pigment cells can be stimul ated not only by the sun’s bright UV rays, but even by lower doses of ambient and infrared light, emitted by your computer screen or overhead lamp.” Construction or office job, sunscreen should be applied daily. Not only can computer rays, affect the skin, but society today relies heavily on cellphones, so people who use cellphones with a high brightness, beware—this can damage skin cells. Now it does sound silly and possibly a little extreme, but the evidence is there, being in an office environment can potentially lead to skin damage if sunscreen is not applied. Let’s not also forget the drive home, where the sun may give just the right lighting for a nice selfie, but that lighting is strong enough to create skin damage. Therefore, it is recommended to try to reduce exposure from the sun mid-afternoon, the time when it is more likely for high sun exposure.

Choosing the right skin care regimen for your needs can sometimes feel like a difficult task. There is a vast variety of skin care products available in stores, and with the growing popularity of do-it-yourself beauty trends, it can be hard to decide what is best for you and your skin. What are the differences between homemade and over the counter skin care products and how can you decide which is the right choice? Use this guide to measure the benefits and drawbacks of each to help you choose the right skin solutions for you!
Homemade skin care solutions are getting more popular and there are a number of reasons why. Do-it-yourself recipes give you the comfort to know exactly what you’re putting on your skin and the freedom to change the ingredients whenever you want to, something that can’t be done with most over the counter products. It is also easier to ensure you’ll have more natural ingredients in your products. There’s no room for confusion about any mystery chemicals in your soaps, lotions, or scrubs because you control what goes in and out of you recipes.
The downside to DIY skincare products is that for solutions to treat specific skin issues, it can be difficult and expensive to find all the necessary ingredients to completely and effectively treat a skin issue. Also, the time and preparation it takes to make certain products might be inconvenient for someone who would want immediate access to their creations. For example, homemade soap can take anywhere from three to six weeks to fully cure before it’s safe for use, infusing oils may take four to six hours and lotion can take up to an hour to prepare depending on your ingredients.
The biggest benefit over the counter products offer is that they are immediately ready for use. There is ease and plenty of variety to try different products that have been researched and tested for safety and effectiveness that won’t strain your wallet. If product works for you and you want to stock up, it’s as simple as going to your nearest beauty store. Likewise, if something doesn’t work for you, it is easy to research a different product and purchase it rather than going through the hassle of writing, preparing and making a brand new recipe.
The most important thing to think about when selecting a skin care regimen is identifying what your specific skin care needs are and how you want your products to benefit your skin. Our My Natural Beauty Skin Tone line contains a number of all-natural products that cleanse, treat and moisturize to uncover your skin’s natural radiance. This line is formulated with the finest natural ingredients including aloe vera, shea butter, pure olive oil, carrot seed oil, lavender, rosemary oil and more for powerful, organic treatment with a luxurious feel. Find the best of both worlds with Clear Essence Cosmetics!

We’ve talked about how to keep makeup brushes and applicators clean. Now, let’s discuss the act of applying makeup in order to prevent breakouts and keep your face looking just as beautiful underneath. There are many habits we have all been guilty of that we do not think could be affecting our skin.
We often apply foundation with our fingers in order to get controlled coverage, but sometimes we forget to wash our hands. You don’t want to miss this step. Along with spreading foundation across your face, you will also be spreading bacteria and oil from your fingertips to your face. Also, when doing your eye makeup, do not rest your hands on your cheeks, or other parts of your face, without washing your hands. You can even put a tissue paper under your fingers, and then rest them on your cheek when applying precise eye makeup.
Don’t apply makeup to dry skin! Always moisturize your face, and even your lips, before applying makeup. Moisturized skin makes it easier to apply makeup evenly, giving you a polished look. Exfoliate your face at least once a week in order to keep your face soft and smooth, for a perfect makeup application.
Also, when choosing foundations, make sure to choose a brand or a formula that works with your skin type. If your skin is on the oily side for example, look for oil free and matte finish foundations. If you have normal to dry skin, look for moisturizing liquid foundations or tinted moisturizers. They are great for giving the coverage you want while keeping your skin hydrated. If you struggle with acne, use water based, non-comedogenic makeup products that won’t clog your pores.
But, the most important makeup tip of all is to keep your skin healthy underneath. Your makeup removal process and skincare between makeup applications is just as important as safe makeup application tips. Make sure to thoroughly cleanse and tone your skin to remove built up dirt and oil from the face, then moisturize your face each night after a day of wearing makeup. Try our Anti-Aging Toner Astringent with AHA to refine pores, exfoliate dead skin cells and gently clarify and tone your skin by removing excess dirt and oil left behind from cleansing. And, for a light-weight moisturizer with SPF 15 protection and a smooth finish, try our My Natural Beauty Moisturizing Lotion.
Healthy makeup application can be tricky sometimes, but with these tips in mind, you’ll be able to put your best face forward and let the real you shine through!

We thought our teen years were going to be the end of our acne days, and for some of us they were. However, for others it was just the beginning. Acne is a natural process that everyone will have to go through. Granted, some people have it worse than others but that is ok. Before I go on no matter what your age is and how bad your acne is – its ok, keep your head held high and smile. The great side to acne is there are ways to cure it. There are medicines that you can use to help clear up this situation. There are facial cleansers that you can use to remove current blemishes and prevent more acne from appearing.
According to American Academy of Dermatology, women in their 30’s and beyond still have acne. It may not be visible on the face, but it can be found in other places around the body. Some of the most common places are the back, shoulders, butt, and your upper arms. There also is not just one type of acne, there is the common blackheads and whiteheads but, that’s not all. The first type of acne is called Papules which feels hard and makes your skin feel like sandpaper. There are Cysts which is when pores fill up with dead skin cells, oil, and bacteria. This type can hurt a lot if the bacteria travels deeper into the skin. Last, there are Nodules which are large hard bumps that are under the surface of your skin. This type will leave scars.
According to U.S. National Library of Medicine (Medline Plus) no one knows exactly what causes acne. However, there have been studies done showing a link with acne and hormone changes, which can explain why teenagers and women are prone to it. There are other studies that shows that stress does not cause acne but it can make matters worse. Also, there is little evidence that food causes acne. So go ahead and eat that greasy food and sweets, just not a lot of it because it can cause other issues in your health.
Acne can cause more than just physical issues. It can make people have low self-esteem, depression, and anxiety. It can even create social withdrawals. People that have acne may feel like they never look good because of their acne. Losing your self-esteem can cause depression. Depression is actually very common for those who have acne. One might separate themselves from other and feel that they are ugly. Since acne begins at a young age it can become a trait well into adult years. The interesting thing that scientist have found was no matter the severity of acne, depression is still a common thread. Meaning someone with very little acne could still become depressed because of it.
Well stop worrying because your problems have been heard and have been taking into consideration when making Clear Essence’s Blemish Control Wash Formula for Acne and Medicated Cleansing Bar Extra Strength from the Platinum Line. For those of you that want to lighten your skin without bleaching your skin or getting too light, Hydroquinone is the answer. Does the name, “Hydroquinone”, scare you? With thousands of articles online and in print attacking Hydroquinone for being detrimental to a person’s health, I wouldn’t be surprised if it scares you; but it shouldn’t, especially when formulated in Clear Essence Cosmetics. Hydroquinone is an active ingredient that reduces the production of melanin in the skin, thus causing the skin to become fairer. Yes, in 2006 the FDA banned the use of Hydroquinone, but that is simply because it wasn’t being used correctly by doctors and companies around the globe. But soon enough the FDA became aware that in a less concentrated state, Hydroquinone is far less dangerous and just as effective. So this is why today, Clear Essence Cosmetics is here to offer you our skincare lines with 2% Hydroquinone so you can quickly lighten your skin without worrying about any damaging effects to your body or overall health. Our customer’s safety is a top priority for Clear Essence Cosmetics; which is why we test every batch of our product to insure that it is safe and effective. If you have sensitive skin; though, get a dime-sized drop of our product and rub it on your skin and wait 24 hours to see if any irritations arise. If one does arise, Clear Essence Cosmetics will gladly replace your product with something that is safer for your skin! Feel free to contact us today and we can consult you into having the best skin of your life!
Alpha Hydroxy Acid:

AHA is proven to be safe and does not take much more than some patience to get the results you are looking for. If this sounds enticing to you, then be sure to try Clear Essence Cosmetic’s Alpha Hydroxy Series. This is a skincare line specifically formulated with AHA in order to provide our customer with a cheap, safe, and effective way to combat dry, faded, and wrinkled skin. For many, Glycerin sounds like a chemical produced at an oil refinery, thus piggybacking a terrible connotation to an ingredient that is extremely safe and effective to use. In a basic definition, Glycerin is a light, organic, non-greasy fatty acid used as a lubricant and moisturizer, but why is it so effective? Glycerin is effective because of two characteristics: it’s highly hygroscopic and it’s a skin-identical ingredient. Being hygroscopic, Glycerin pulls water from the outside (humidity) and from the rest of your body. Pulling water from lower levels of skin up and from the outside air sounds like a good idea, but it ultimately leads to dry skin because if there’s no water below your layer of skin or outside, then you will be left dry, but that is not the case with Glycerin. Because Glycerin is a skin-identical ingredient, meaning it is found naturally in the skin, the body works very effectively with the ingredient and helps to prevent skin from drying-out or scaling. Glycerin is cheap, effective, and available in several of our lines, so go out and try the effects of Glycerin!
