Clear Essence Blog
“So, what exactly is this?” It is a question we can all relate to when we’re shopping for skin care products. Sometimes it seems as if there are so many complicated names on the back of our products that it gets confusing to figure out which name does what for your skin. And, especially when considering skin care products that deal with improving your skin’s complexion, we want to make sure all of the active ingredients in our products won’t damage our skin. Alpha Hydroxy Acid is a name that is common in anti-aging skin care, but does it really do? Where does it come from? And, most importantly, is it right for you? Get the real truth about Alpha Hydroxy Acid and anti-aging so you can make the right choice for you and your skin the next time you head down the beauty isle.
Chemical Free Skin care is the best…right?
Our skin is our body’s biggest organ. It protects us from harsh things in the atmosphere and it’s our job to take special care with our skin so it can continue to keep our bodies healthy and safe. So naturally, when it comes to researching what skin care products are safe to use on your skin, it’s understandable to look for the most natural and safest skin care systems possible. For a lot of people this means skipping anything that seems like it’s packed with chemicals in search of a more natural approach to handling skin care issues, but there seems to be a misconception about chemicals, skin care and what is ultimately safe for use on your skin.
A chemical is a substance composed of molecules or ions that cannot be separated by any physical means. From salt to sugar to water, chemicals are naturally occurring and are all around us every single day. Because of this, it is physically impossible to encounter anything (especially in skin care) that’s truly “chemical-free”. And, while there can be valid conversations about the benefits of natural versus synthetic chemicals in products and foods we consume, it is important to note that there are just as many natural chemicals that can do our bodies harm as there are synthetic chemicals that work well with our bodies. The true concern is to research each chemical that you’re unfamiliar with to gauge if it’s effective and safe for human use, and, always make sure that the products that you’re using are tested, safe and approved for use!
What is AHA?
AHAs or Alpha Hydroxy Acids are one of those naturally occurring, organic chemicals that we see is commonly featured in skin care. Alpha Hydroxy Acids are found in many of our natural food sources and when applied on the skin, they work efficiently as an exfoliant to assist in the shedding of dead skin cells and work deep within our skin to improve collagen formation to promote skin firmness. These qualities make AHAs a natural godsend for its anti-aging benefits.
There are multiple acids that are considered to be Alpha Hydroxy Acids, and they are separated by where they’re derived from. Lactic acid is found in fermented foods and sour milk, like yogurt, cheese and pickled foods. It is extremely effective in fighting off premature wrinkling, hyperpigmentation and restoring youthful skin. Glycolic acid is found in natural sources that are high in sugar like fruits and sugar cane. When used for skin care, glycolic acid is most commonly seen in facial peels and skin creams for its effective ability to penetrate deep within your skin to boost your skin’s ability to shed old skin cells and bring, younger, fresher skin cells to the surface. It is great for encouraging smoother skin and fights against acne and wrinkles. There’s also citric acid that comes from citrus fruits (lemons, oranges, limes, etc.) that are full of natural antioxidants that fight against the effects of free-radicals in your skin which are known to cause signs of premature aging in your skin.
Alpha Hydroxy Acids are powerful a component of anti-aging skin care that is natural and effective in helping you achieve youthful, radiant skin. They work well to reverse hyperpigmentation damage caused by the sun and from minor physical trauma to the skin as well. For the best possible anti-aging regimen for you, make sure to incorporate more products containing AHAs or look into making renewing, home made recipes!

Anti-Aging Skin Care
Seven Tips to Fight Premature Aging
Aging. It’s an inevitable part of life that we all have to face. As we get older, things in our bodies begin to change, including the way our skin looks and feels. And, as our bodies change, we also have to change the way that we care for ourselves. Thankfully, there’s a plethora of research available with valuable information that can assist you with ways to care for your aging skin. as well as different methods and tricks that can help slow down the aging process. Aging skin is beautiful skin, and knowing the right way to care for it is essential for long-lasting skin health.
We can’t stop time, but we can pay attention to different activities we engage in that are known to “speed up” the aging process and take a toll on your body and your skin. Stress is a large contributor to premature aging. There is no one specific definition of stress that is agreed upon, but according to the American Institute of Stress, it is any experience or situation that causes “physical, mental or emotional strain or tension.” We need to let our body to rest and rejuvenate from the daily pressures of life. By allowing our stress levels to run on overdrive, our body will start showing signs of depleting energy. We will notice more bags under our eyes, fine lines, and gray hairs.
Stress has a huge effect on our body’s ability to function properly. Your body’s response to stress can manifest in a number of different ways from accelerating your heart rate, inhibiting your body’s ability to digest food and affecting different hormones in your body. When you’re faced with stress, it is important to assess the situation and take necessary steps to alleviate your mind and body from the negative effects of stress for the sake of your overall health. You can do this by engaging in relaxing activities. Try meditation, exercise, or listening to your favorite tunes! And, most importantly, don’t forget to breathe. When you slow down and focus on your body when you’re stressed, you’re actively taking care of your health and caring for your skin!
It feels great to soak in the sun on a warm day, but be careful not to take in too much! Excessive exposure to the sun’s UV rays is known to cause skin discoloration, wrinkles and can even increase your risk for skin cancer if you do not protect your skin from the sun properly. Too much sun negatively affects the elastin in your skin, which is a protein fiber that is responsible for your skin retaining its shape if it is stretched. When the sun breaks these fibers down, your skin loses its natural elasticity and sags as gravity continues to pull on your skin. Always make sure to use sunscreen with a higher SPF protection whenever you know that you will be out in the sun longer than thirty minutes.
Eat Healthy. Fight Free Radicals
We have all heard the phrase “you are what you eat,” and when it comes to our skin, it is absolutely true. A well-balanced diet will help you maintain healthy, supple skin that will help fight off visible signs of aging in your skin. Choose foods that are rich in antioxidants and vitamins. They are great for working against the effects of free radicals on your skin. A free radicals, or oxidants, are atoms or molecules that are missing an electron. They damage our skin cells by attacking normal atoms in our skin in an attempt to steal an electron from other healthy atoms. When an excess amount of free radicals accumulate, it causes damage deep within the skin that makes our skin age faster. The older we get, the harder it is for our body to get rid of excess free radicals. One of the easiest and effective ways to fight off the effects of free radicals in our skin is to search for agents that are loaded with antioxidants.
It is important to work on keeping your skin healthy and youthful early. Collagen and elastin in our skin begin to decline at age twenty-five and the effects of free radicals can speed that up. Antioxidants are molecules that stop other molecules from oxidizing, which is what causes chemical reactions in molecules that lead to the creation of free radicals.
Thankfully there are a variety of foods and products that are filled with natural antioxidants that will target free radicals and improve the overall health of your body and your skin. Eat fruits and vegetables like carrots, kale and watermelon that are rich in Beta-carotenes; broccoli, grapefruit and strawberries which have great sources of vitamin C; and avocados, spinach and peppers which contain vitamin E. To get the best benefits, eat your antioxidant rich food raw to not risk losing any nutrients when the food is cooked.
Moisture is an overlooked key to keeping your skin soft, supple and healthy. When your skin doesn’t get the moisture that it needs, it will dry out and cause premature wrinkles, rashes, itching and flaking. The same way a grape can turn into a raisin, you skin can also change dramatically if you do not moisturize correctly.
Getting the moisture that you need can be done in a number of ways, but the easiest is to consume enough water or water-rich foods, and to make sure that you are using a moisturizer that is compatible with your skin. A great moisturizing tip is to use your lotions and crèmes right after a warm shower when your skin is still slightly damp. This method will help trap the moisture on your skin while your pores are open from the warmth of the water to maximize your skin’s hydration. And, for those extra dry trouble spots, follow with a natural body oil of your choice to promote smooth skin and moisture retention.
Also, pay attention to your diet! Moisturizing your skin on the inside is just as important as moisturizing it on the outside. The next time you go to the grocery store, make sure to pick up more moisturizing foods and leave behind the dehydrating ones. Try fruits and vegetables like watermelon, cucumber, cantaloupe, kiwi and tomatoes to give your body a hydrated glow. And, try to limit your alcohol and coffee intake. Alcohol and coffee are both natural diuretics, and when consumed in large quantities, they will deplete your body’s water resources without replenishing it.
Boost Your Skin Routine
When you think about your skin care routine, we tend to just think about our skin care products. But, that’s just half the picture. What we do with our skin care products in our routine is just as important as the products themselves. Creating a comprehensive care routine can help break any skin goal plateaus and get your skin feeling brand new in no time.
A good, comprehensive skin care routine, especially one for anti-aging, is typically a multi-step system that works to counteract the different signs of visible aging. To start building your personal anti-aging skin routine, use these steps as guidelines:
- Use a skin cleanser that is water-soluble and removes dirt, oil and bacteria from the face and body. Cleansing your skin gives you a clean, healthy slate to work with when continuing with the next steps in your anti-aging skin routine. Follow with a toner to refine and tighten your pores and clarify the skin.
- After cleansing, use a product the directly targets your specific skin issue. For anti-aging, look for treatment serums and crèmes with antioxidants and essential vitamins that will enhance your skin’s regeneration to keep you looking young and healthy. And if possible, select treatment products that also protect against UVA and UVB rays for added anti-aging skin protection.
- Moisturized skin is healthy skin and moisturizing regularly will help keep your skin youthful in appearance. Cleansing and using targeted treatments on your skin can strip your skin of its natural oils, making it sensitive and more prone to dryness and wrinkles. Replenish your skin’s natural moisture by using a moisturizer that will silken your skin.
Healthy Cleansing + AHA
Last, but certainly not least, the way you physically treat your skin can make a big impact in avoiding premature aging. The best anti-aging treat you can give your skin when cleansing and moisturizing is to use products containing AHA. AHA, or Alpha Hydroxy Acid, is a powerful exfoliant that works hard to shed dead skin cells and increase your skin’s cell turnover to bring out brighter, younger skin. It is naturally found in many foods we enjoy including pineapple, tomatoes and yogurt. AHA washes, lotions and masks are applied topically to directly penetrate your problem areas to remove old, damaged skin cells and reveal refreshed, smooth skin.
And when handling your skin, especially delicate, aging skin, apply your products with care. Aging skin is more sensitive to pulling and tugging, so when using a cleanser or a crème try to use upward, circular motions on your face and body. The circular, massaging motion helps stimulate the skin, increasing blood circulation which in turn will feed newer skin cells while they form. The upward motion helps to counteract the downward pull gravity has on your skin to prevent extra wrinkles from forming. Combining skin massages with AHA skincare is a dynamic duo for fighting against premature aging and will give you the fresh skin you’re looking for.

Aging skin is beautiful skin, and knowing the right way to care for it is essential for long-lasting skin health.
Choosing the right skin care regimen for your needs can sometimes feel like a difficult task. There is a vast variety of skin care products available in stores, and with the growing popularity of do-it-yourself beauty trends, it can be hard to decide what is best for you and your skin. What are the differences between homemade and over the counter skin care products and how can you decide which is the right choice? Use this guide to measure the benefits and drawbacks of each to help you choose the right skin solutions for you!
Homemade skin care solutions are getting more popular and there are a number of reasons why. Do-it-yourself recipes give you the comfort to know exactly what you’re putting on your skin and the freedom to change the ingredients whenever you want to, something that can’t be done with most over the counter products. It is also easier to ensure you’ll have more natural ingredients in your products. There’s no room for confusion about any mystery chemicals in your soaps, lotions, or scrubs because you control what goes in and out of you recipes.
The downside to DIY skincare products is that for solutions to treat specific skin issues, it can be difficult and expensive to find all the necessary ingredients to completely and effectively treat a skin issue. Also, the time and preparation it takes to make certain products might be inconvenient for someone who would want immediate access to their creations. For example, homemade soap can take anywhere from three to six weeks to fully cure before it’s safe for use, infusing oils may take four to six hours and lotion can take up to an hour to prepare depending on your ingredients.
The biggest benefit over the counter products offer is that they are immediately ready for use. There is ease and plenty of variety to try different products that have been researched and tested for safety and effectiveness that won’t strain your wallet. If product works for you and you want to stock up, it’s as simple as going to your nearest beauty store. Likewise, if something doesn’t work for you, it is easy to research a different product and purchase it rather than going through the hassle of writing, preparing and making a brand new recipe.
The most important thing to think about when selecting a skin care regimen is identifying what your specific skin care needs are and how you want your products to benefit your skin. Our My Natural Beauty Skin Tone line contains a number of all-natural products that cleanse, treat and moisturize to uncover your skin’s natural radiance. This line is formulated with the finest natural ingredients including aloe vera, shea butter, pure olive oil, carrot seed oil, lavender, rosemary oil and more for powerful, organic treatment with a luxurious feel. Find the best of both worlds with Clear Essence Cosmetics!
We’ve talked about how to keep makeup brushes and applicators clean. Now, let’s discuss the act of applying makeup in order to prevent breakouts and keep your face looking just as beautiful underneath. There are many habits we have all been guilty of that we do not think could be affecting our skin.
We often apply foundation with our fingers in order to get controlled coverage, but sometimes we forget to wash our hands. You don’t want to miss this step. Along with spreading foundation across your face, you will also be spreading bacteria and oil from your fingertips to your face. Also, when doing your eye makeup, do not rest your hands on your cheeks, or other parts of your face, without washing your hands. You can even put a tissue paper under your fingers, and then rest them on your cheek when applying precise eye makeup.
Don’t apply makeup to dry skin! Always moisturize your face, and even your lips, before applying makeup. Moisturized skin makes it easier to apply makeup evenly, giving you a polished look. Exfoliate your face at least once a week in order to keep your face soft and smooth, for a perfect makeup application.
Also, when choosing foundations, make sure to choose a brand or a formula that works with your skin type. If your skin is on the oily side for example, look for oil free and matte finish foundations. If you have normal to dry skin, look for moisturizing liquid foundations or tinted moisturizers. They are great for giving the coverage you want while keeping your skin hydrated. If you struggle with acne, use water based, non-comedogenic makeup products that won’t clog your pores.
But, the most important makeup tip of all is to keep your skin healthy underneath. Your makeup removal process and skincare between makeup applications is just as important as safe makeup application tips. Make sure to thoroughly cleanse and tone your skin to remove built up dirt and oil from the face, then moisturize your face each night after a day of wearing makeup. Try our Anti-Aging Toner Astringent with AHA to refine pores, exfoliate dead skin cells and gently clarify and tone your skin by removing excess dirt and oil left behind from cleansing. And, for a light-weight moisturizer with SPF 15 protection and a smooth finish, try our My Natural Beauty Moisturizing Lotion.
Healthy makeup application can be tricky sometimes, but with these tips in mind, you’ll be able to put your best face forward and let the real you shine through!
Want to learn some tips on how to apply makeup for a flawless finish? Use these makeup tips to ensure a glamorous look on the outside with healthy skin underneath!
Nowadays almost every skin care brand offers a three step or multiple product system in order to treat various skin needs and problems. We have often believed that in order to see results all our skin care products must fall under one brand name in order to completely treat the skin.
Well what’s really the truth?
Should you use different products that match your skin care needs regardless of brand or is sticking with one skin care line the best way to ensure quality and skin receptiveness? Let’s check out the pros and cons below:
If you already have one skin care product you love, chances are you’ll probably love another product that brand offers. Brands that pride themselves on having sensitive skin care lines and natural-based skin care products can also encourage brand loyalty, as users want to ensure their skin does not have allergic reactions to new ingredients.
For those new to skin care, it can be easier to follow and adopt a skin care system that is already created by industry dermatologists and chemists. Many skin care lines’ goal is to remove the headache and confusion that comes with choosing products for your skin type.
Every Brand Can’t Have Every Product
While brands try to create multiple products for every possible skin issue or texture, it is impossible for a brand to have a solution for 100% of the market.
Lack of Individuality
Products that work for one person’s skin logically cannot work for every person on Earth’s skin. It may take mixing and matching skin care brands to find the perfect combination for your individual skin.
So what products do you choose?
Now, we’re not saying you have to run out and try every skin care brand or mix every last tube, jar, or vial in your medicine cabinet. Know what issues you’re wishing to treat along with your skin type to find products that are specifically meeting your skin care goals. Focus on the ingredients and reputation/reviews of the product from other users with similar skin problems.
Also, try to add new products into your routine slowly. Some products take a week or two for your skin to start showing results. Packing on tons of different products at once can make skin irritated. And since your assorted branded products don’t give you an order for mixing and matching, always follow the rule of layering products from lighter to thicker, i.e. a serum should go on the skin before a heavy cream. Your skin cannot tell the difference between brands. Until a company is able to make a miracle all-in-one solution for every possible skin type and texture, we may be resorting to mixing and matching for some time to come!

We all come across a time in our life when we need a specialist to treat our skin. We need something more than just a skin clearing face wash or a lotion that evens skin tone. We seek out something more effective, instead, like a facial or medical treatment. Searching for a spa or a specialist to handle our more demanding skin care needs may be tricky. However, with the right research, you can treat the more delicate issues that your skin faces.
When it comes to medical treatments for skin care, it is not always necessary to seek out a dermatologist. If you have a concerning mole, for example, your general practitioner will remove and examine it right when you go in for a check-up. They can often prescribe treatments for eczema and other skin-related problems, as well. If a general practitioner needs a specialist to examine an issue, he or she will refer you to a dermatologist.
If you seek an esthetician for beauty related needs, consult sites like Yelp to see which services may be right for you. Yelp is a great tool to see which spa or esthetician is of high quality. Smaller spas may have poor practices and service, but may also pamper you more if you are a loyal client. Bigger franchises often have good standards, and follow a set of rules to offer the best service.
Last, but not least, be an informed client. If you are getting a pedicure, for example, you need to know how to protect yourself from infections. If you shave your legs the day of, and have an open wound, you are at risk of contracting bacterial infections when you get your feet scrubbed. Also, be aware of whether or not the person handling your care is using proper hygiene. Make sure they wash their hands, or wear gloves if needed. Check to see if they are using brand new tools, or reusing old ones. Being an informed, aware client is essential to receive proper skin care.

Hydroquinone has received a poor reputation over the years. Most of the misinformation about this ingredient stems from misuse and a lack of education. People have continued to put the ingredient in a bad light by simply basing opinions on the worst cases of misuse of hydroquinone. Others simply don’t understand what this ingredient does. When trying a new product that has active ingredients in it, it is important to understand what those ingredients treat. Clear Essence’s Platinum and Anti-Aging lines contain small and appropriate concentrations of hydroquinone and we want all of our customers to feel safe and to know what this ingredient does for the skin.
Hydroquinone is one of the few FDA approved skin-lightening ingredients. It can be a great treatment to even one’s skin tone by fading discolored skin such as freckles, age spots, sunspots, and other discolorations created by hormone changes, acne, or injury to the skin. Chemically speaking, hydroquinone decreases the formation of melanin. Melanin is the pigment in the skin that gives it its color. Melanin is also a natural UV protectant. Hydroquinone is found in stores in concentrations of 0.5% to 2%. The FDA has regulated that no more than 2% concentration can be purchased over the counter. A doctor must prescribe any product that contains a concentration higher than 2%. A concentration of 12% prevents the production of melanin altogether. When hydroquinone is properly formulated it is not a harmful ingredient and there is no substantial research proving otherwise.
Some may say that hydroquinone causes cancer yet, “hydroquinone happens to be a potent antioxidant and there is even research that shows that workers who handle pure hydroquinone actually have lower incidences of cancer than the population as a whole (Paulaschoice.com).” The only cases in which a patient did develop cancer or an issue of darker colored skin are those who did not use sunscreen in conjunction with the ingredient. Since melanin is our natural UV protectant it is important to realize that one’s skin may become sensitive to the sun after displacing the dark spot or discoloration. Although it is always critical to use sunscreen to prevent damage to the skin, it is even more important when using a product to lighten discolorations.
Research has indicated problematic skin reactions are rare and more often than not, minor. The most startling risk is a skin disorder called ochronosis, which is a bluish tint of the skin. This is caused by long time use of a high concentration of hydroquinone. Again, not using sunscreen will cause the area to re-darken and can sometimes make the area even darker due to the inhibition of our natural UV protection, melanin.
The correct way to use hydroquinone is by following the instructions on the drug facts label or package. Also, before using it is recommended to do a “test patch” by applying a small amount to a small area of healthy skin (such as inner wrist) to make sure an allergic reaction does not occur.
Clear Essence skin care products that contain hydroquinone always adhere to the FDA regulation of 2% concentration. Some of Clear Essence’s skin lightening products also contain SPF 15 so that an extra layer of sunscreen does not have to be applied! As you can see it is important to know the ingredients you put on your skin and how to properly use the skin care products in your daily regimen. Although it is trendy to say a product is all natural, science can sometimes give us the most effective results to ensure our skin is always flawless! The key is remembering proper use of these ingredients in healthy concentrations!!

Is this what I think it is? Is this a wrinkle? Some of us may have said this while looking into the mirror in the morning when we are putting on our make-up. Getting older comes with some great rewards such as being able to drive, drink alcohol, renting a car, and have credibility to start your own career; but it also comes with some bad as well, such as paying bills, bags underneath your eyes, your skin becoming dull, and wrinkles appearing. Well, no matter what we will always have to pay bills, yet there are ways to clear up those bags underneath your eyes, freshen your skin, and even get rid of your wrinkles. There are also different routines you can do to prevent all of these unwanted imperfections. Some of them don’t even require money being spent, just change to your daily schedule.
One of the biggest things that we tend to forget to do when we get older is sleep. Ok sometimes we don’t forget, we just don’t have enough time to get the recommended 8 hours of sleep each night. Yet,
not only does our mind and body need it, so does our skin. During the day our skin becomes a protection shield against nasty germs that want to get into our bodies. The skin is constantly protecting our other cells that make up the body. While we are sleeping our skin is repairing itself, just like a warrior would do in between battles. The way the skin repairs itself is by sending new skin cells to replace the old and damaged ones. If we don’t get the sleep that we need our skin will become tired and over worked which is why we get those dark under eye circles , dull looking skin and wrinkles. Also, lack of sleep can lead to stress. Stress can cause your skin to have many different problems – acne, and wrinkles or “worry lines”. So stop stressing and start sleeping – your body, mind, and skin will appreciate it.
Like I have mentioned in the Let’s Rejuvenate Your Skin article, the sun can also affect your skin and can cause it to age faster than you expected. Our skin has a love hate relationship with the sun. It loves it because it needs it for Vitamin D. It hates it because it can damage the skin cells due to UV damage. The top layer of your skin is doing its best to protect itself, but it comes down to how much melanin you have in your skin. Melanin protects the skin from UV rays, and the more exposure your skin gets, it will cause your skin to produce more melanin (UV protection) and that is what makes you tan. However, if you don’t have a lot of melanin the UV rays will fight pass the top layer and will burn your skin. As UV rays enter the skin cell it harbors small amounts of cancer. Peeling of the skin is your cells committing suicide and shedding off from your body to prevent these traces of cancer from harming any more cells in your body. The constant death of your skin cells is what causes your skin to become wrinkled as the epidermis becomes thinner and loses elasticity. So to avoid this wear sunscreen or sunblock when you know you are going to be in the sun for a long time!!
If you smoke this too may be the reason why your skin is becoming wrinkled. Smoking contains toxins which cut off the oxygen and nutrient supply to your skin. It will also cause your skin to dry out, and create age spots. It is the worst possible thing you can do to your skin and health. Drinking water however, is one of the best things you can do. Drinking water helps get rid of the toxins in your body and will help your skin over time.
Changes in your daily schedule may be hard and that is completely understandable. A company that knows the struggles and is ready to help you by giving you the skin what you need is Clear Essence. Clear Essence’s Anti-Aging Skin Care Line is an age defying line made with Alpha Hydroxy Acid. The Alpha Hydroxy assists in shedding of dead skin cells and improves collagen formation, which will help make your skin look younger and eliminate wrinkles. The products in this line are all below $10, which is great if you are on a budget but still looking for effective products and great results! Clear Essence wants the real you to shine through. If you have any question please visit clearessence.com/. And remember the difference is clear.
