Hydroquinone – Let’s unpack this popular ingredient!

Let’s unpack this popular ingredient!

Skin bleaching, skin lightening, and skin brightening all refer to one central ingredient: hydroquinone (HQ). It is the only FDA approved skin lightening ingredient in the U.S. and is very effective in fading dark spots. This popular product has become a controversial topic in Black skincare, so we are going to give you the facts and bust all of the myths associated with hydroquinone.

HQ works by decreasing the amount of melanin being produced in the treated area. Melanin is the compound in skin that gives us our color. One critique of HQ is that it causes skin darkening rather than skin lightening. Because melanin is the substance that give protection from UV rays, the skin will become more sensitive once the melanin production begins to slow down. If the treated area is not protected by some sort of sunscreen, the skin can become darker. To combat this, it is imperative that the treated area is followed up with sunscreen. Some hydroquinone products, like Clear Essence’s Skin Beautifying Milk with SPF 15, already include sun protection. This type of product is great because it protects the skin while evening out complexion.

While hydroquinone is very effective and works wonders for many people, it may not work the same for everyone. To see how your body will react to a certain product, it is important to test the product on yourself prior to actually using it. The best way to do this is by applying a small amount of the product on the inside of your arm and waiting 24 hours. If you notice any type of irritation, try using a product for sensitive skin instead. There are Black skincare products, such as those found in Clear Essence’s Lemon Plus Vitamin C Line, that help to fade dark spots without hydroquinone.

“I’ am proud of my complexion, I don’t want to bleach my skin!”

A common misconception about hydroquinone is that anyone who uses the chemical is ashamed of their skin color. This is the unfortunate stigma associated with HQ. Anyone can get dark spots, whether it be from acne or injury; hydroquinone can diminish those tell-tale scars. African American Skincare is all about embracing and enhancing our natural hues. When used properly, hydroquinone does exactly that, it enhances the beauty of the natural skin complexion

I would like to find out how long is the maximum I can use clear essence with hydroquinone please?
Is it safe to use it more than a year or it has limits thanks.

    • Hi there, as long as your product is not expired it is safe to continue using it until you achieve your desired results. You can find the expiration date on the bottom of the bottle or packaging. We recommend using the product twice a day for 4-6 weeks for the discoloration to fade into your natural skin tone. If the discoloration is very dark or has been present for a long time it may take up to 8-10 weeks to see complete improvement. Use sunscreen or the My Natural Beauty line to maintain the effect. Let us know if you have any other questions or concerns. Thank you for choosing Clear Essence!

I’m started using Clear Essence beautifying milk for 2 weeks and it work wonders know breakouts skin was beautiful and smooth after that I started using clear essence extra strength soap and started having breakouts again I stop using the soap but I still used the lotion why haven’t my skin became the way it was in the first two weeks … What do you recommend I was so happy with this product until I included the soap I have stop using soap for abt 3 weeks

    • Hi there,
We’re sorry you had a breakout or unpleasant experience with the products. If it is your first time trying Clear Essence products we recommend testing a patch of skin on the inner wrist or elbow for 24 hours to ensure you do not have an allergic reaction to any ingredients within our products. We also have products for sensitive skin types such as our Lemon Plus Vitamin C line, My Natural Beauty line, Sensitive Skin Care line (green and purple packaging) and Adure and Chimere lines. These products contain natural ingredients.
Another important note is to remember that oily skin is best treated using cleansers and serums while dry skin types can benefit from creams and lotions to hydrate the skin. It is important to know your skin type when using our products to prevent overly dry skin or clogged pores. From your description it sounds like the Medicated Cleansing Bar soap might have dried out your skin, as it helps to dry up oil and reduce acne, and caused irritation. We would suggest trying our Complexion Soap with AHA as it is suited for all skin types and is especially moisturizing for dry skin. Or check out our My Natural Beauty Olive Oil Soap Bar which is formulated to condition dry skin with sensitive ingredients and the natural power of Olive Oil.
Finally always remember to apply sunscreen before venturing into the sun when using products to lighten dark spots and uneven skin tones to maintain and protect your skin from future discolorations or redarkening. Our products can also make the skin sensitive to UV rays so this can also cause irritation to the skin once exposed to sunlight without proper sunscreen protection.
We hope this helps. Let us know if you have any other questions or concerns. Thank you!
