It’s hard to scroll through the seemingly infinite pages of DIY beauty recipes on Pinterest without questioning why you ever spend money on manufactured products. Homemade products are usually more economical, more natural and the process is certainly more fun.

But then again, if making beauty products were as simple as mixing a few household items together, why would the L’Oréals and Estée Lauders of the world be sinking so much time and money into scientist-run labs and technological innovations?

To get to the bottom of our inner debate, we asked three skincare experts to share their take. Below, they break down the benefits and disadvantages of taking beauty treatments into your own hands.

Pro: Transparency.
“Your skin is the largest organ in your body and absorbs 65 percent of what you put on it,” says Cecilia Wong, a New York-based facialist and founder of Cecilia Wong Skincare. It’s important, then, to be aware of what you’re applying on your skin. Making your own products puts you in control and means that you don’t have to worry about deciphering long ingredient lists.

Con: Shorter shelf life.
A product made in a lab is strategically formulated with preservatives or ingredients proven to last, while a homemade concoction will likely spoil quickly. “[A manufacturer] can put blueberry extract in a store-sold skin cream for antioxidants, for example, but a product with actual blueberries in it will go bad in a few days,” says Alexis Wolfer, holistic health coach and author of The Recipe For Radiance.
